Hi everyone. I built Inknarrate because I wanted decent text-to-speech without a subscription, a character limit or sending my text to someone's server. How it works: you paste or import text, pick a voice and press Speak. The voice is generated on your own computer, inside the browser tab. Nothing you type or generate is uploaded anywhere, and once it's set up it works offline. What it can do: - Three open voice engines: Kokoro (very natural English), Kitten TTS (small and fast, fine on weak computers) and Piper (English, Spanish and Arabic) - Works sentence by sentence: edit one sentence and only that one is regenerated - Import .txt, .md, .epub, .docx, .srt and more - Export WAV or MP3, subtitles (SRT/VTT), or a zip with one file per sentence - Speed, pitch, voice blending, pronunciation rules (respell a name so it's read right) - Free and open source (GPL-3.0) The honest limits: - It ships with no voices. You download a voice model once from Hugging Face and drop it into the app (a few minutes, a tutorial walks you through it). This keeps the app small. - The choice of voices is small compared to big commercial tools. - It works in Chrome, Brave and Firefox. It does not work in Edge yet, sorry. - Kokoro ran fine on my old 2-core laptop with 4 GB of RAM, slower than real time but usable. Very long books use a lot of memory in a browser tab.
