What's everyones thoughts on how models and GPUs progress from here?

Wait 5 sec.

With the release of deepseek v4.1 flash 1017, I think we all realize it was a big jump in local capabilities. With that, increases the demand for local AI and thus the hardware for it. With the data center and token consumption & Jevon's ongoing, along with the memory & GPU shortage, it leaves one hard to wrap their head around prices now and prices later if you don't already have one. The way I see it, even if GPUs depreciate at 10% a year for the next 5 years, your likelihood of getting probably a 50-100% increase in productivity or usage out of them seems high. BUT that almost entirely depends on open source models progressing. Which has basically just been china. If china ever decides to stop releasing open source models (which they could by the government), then the open source development and thus demand for local AI takes a huge hit and so will GPU prices and so on. So i'm curious as to how people are thinking about GPU / Memory and overall hardware prices for the future. I'd imagine within 6 months we likely have at or close to opus 5.5 level models able to run at a similar hardware requirement that 1017 has. And just to think about that being a future makes me want to buy hardware. Jevon's in action I suppose. But what does that say for future hardware, future models, and future prices? submitted by /u/Sensualities [link] [comments]
