Should on-call have been discussed before accepting a job?

Wait 5 sec.

I’ve been a nurse for a year and a half. My hospital is the only one I have ever worked at. Prior to accepting this job, I didn’t actively realize on-call was a thing. I didn’t know I could be put on call and expected to show up within 30 minutes and the pay for this is $2/hour. I feel like this is something new employees should be made aware of and agree to in the hiring agreement? Or is this just so normal that they don’t have to bring it up? For reference, we are on call very, very often. I thought I was signing up for full time, but that’s not what we are getting. Problem is, we are a small, unpopular hospital in our area. And our hospital has goals of opening a new unit. This means we need patients to justify it and nurses to staff it. We need that to happen magically at the same time. But for now, we are just hiring a new unit’s worth of nurses and staffing them on our one unit. Meaning we have to put several on call every day because there are simply too many. submitted by /u/zootedtrash [link] [comments]
