SPX: The Fed Isn't the Real Test. Market Breadth Is.S&P 500SP_DLY:SPXTeam-StructureXS&P 500 | October 28–30, 2026 Bias: Neutral into the event window. Bullish above 7,770 with confirmation; defensive below 7,700. The most important question this week is not whether the Federal Reserve holds interest rates. It is whether the market can turn a concentrated, mega-cap-led rebound into a broader, sustainable advance. The distinction matters. On October 27, the S&P 500 advanced approximately 0.6% while a majority of its constituents declined. This is the kind of divergence that can make a capitalization-weighted index appear healthier than the underlying market. The macro setup Three different forces are converging: 1. Monetary policy: A Fed hold is widely anticipated. The more important variable is how Treasury yields respond to the expected future path of policy. 2. AI capital expenditure: Microsoft and Alphabet's earnings will test whether the massive investment cycle is translating into sufficient cloud growth, margins and future free cash flow. AI spending creates revenue for infrastructure suppliers but simultaneously consumes capital at the hyperscalers. 3. Growth versus inflation: Thursday's GDP and PCE releases will test whether the macroeconomic backdrop can support current equity valuations without additional pressure from interest rates. These catalysts are connected. Higher discount rates place greater pressure on long-duration growth valuations precisely when investors are scrutinizing the returns on AI investment. The technical structure SPX has recovered from the October 23 low around **7,612**, but the rebound remains below the October 21 swing high at **7,770**. That creates a clearly defined decision area. Bullish scenario A daily close above 7,770, followed by successful acceptance of that level, opens a path toward approximately 7,815 and then the all-time-high region near 7,845. I would assign greater credibility to that breakout if the equal-weight S&P 500 begins outperforming SPY and Treasury yields remain contained. Bearish scenario If SPX rejects the 7,770 region and loses 7,700 on a closing basis, the recovery becomes vulnerable to a retest of 7,675 and eventually the 7,612 swing low. A sustained break below 7,612 would invalidate the near-term bullish recovery structure. What changes my conviction? Not the first move following the Fed announcement. The important signal is whether price, participation and the macro reaction confirm one another after the initial volatility. A breakout led by a handful of stocks can persist, but it has a different risk profile from an advance supported by expanding breadth. My thesis: The next sustainable leg higher requires more than encouraging headlines. It requires evidence that liquidity conditions, earnings expectations and market participation are moving in the same direction. The level tells us where. The breadth tells us whether to trust it.
