Max Dowman was unlucky to become the subject of Mikel Arteta’s annoyance, as the Gunners were beaten by Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup last night. The Arsenal manager was already visibly livid as his players struggled to break down a team that could be relegated from League Two at the end of this season. It was supposed to be a walk in the park, but the game proved more difficult for the Gunners than anticipated. Arsenal prides itself on developing youth players, and competitions such as this are often where several of them are made. However, the Gunners failed, and their decision to start some academy players backfired spectacularly.Dowman’s Frustrating NightDowman has been a fixture in the first team despite being 16, and much was expected of him in the game. Instead, he grew frustrated as he simply could not perform well for the team, and his evening ended with a red card. The attacker’s dismissal cannot be blamed for the loss, because Arsenal should ideally have been leading comfortably by the time he was sent off. Even so, Arteta was not impressed and told him off as he left the pitch, adding to what was already a difficult night for the teenager.(Photo by Lewis Storey/Getty Images)Merson Backs a Softer ApproachHowever, Paul Merson does not believe the manager used the right approach. As quoted by Standard Sports, he said: “He’s not the last person to get sent off for Arsenal, nor the first.“If it was me, I’d have put my arm around him. It’s still 1-1, they’re still in the game.“We all say things in life we wish we hadn’t and if he [Arteta] could have that back, he’d do it differently.”Merson’s view highlights the delicate balance managers must strike when dealing with young players. While discipline matters, Dowman may have needed reassurance rather than criticism at that moment. Arsenal must now help him learn from the incident, regain his confidence, and ensure that one difficult evening does not derail his development._____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans.
