I built a Mac app that takes the shake out of the mouse pointer, for a close relative who was diagnosed with Parkinson's

Wait 5 sec.

I'm the developer, and this is a one-person project. I'm hard of hearing, so I know what it's like when a computer isn't built for the way you use it. Then I watched the mouse become the hardest part of a close relative's day. The pointer jumped around whatever they aimed at, clicks landed next to buttons, and double-clicks turned into two single clicks. I looked for a fix. SteadyMouse has done this on Windows since 2005, but it has no Mac version yet (checked today). TrueCursor is the other native Mac option ($39 once, 30-day trial, up to 10 Macs), and it's worth a look too. I wanted to build one myself, so I made StillMouse. How it works, briefly -Moving the mouse on purpose stays under about 2 cycles a second; a shake is faster, 3 to 12. StillMouse follows the shake as it changes and takes it out, instead of slowing everything down. On a recorded test movement with a 6 Hz shake added, plain smoothing left 66% of the shake; StillMouse's default preset leaves 7%, with the same 25 ms delay (our own measurement, details on the site). -While the button is down, the pointer holds still, so the click lands where you aimed. Research on mouse use found that more than 1 in 4 clicks slipped for people with motor difficulties (Trewin & Pain, 1999). -A one-minute test suggests one of 8 presets for your hand. With a licence, AI can explain the result in plain words if you ask. Stack: Swift, a menu bar app, Accessibility permission, all processing on the Mac. A Cloudflare Worker for licences. 11 languages. I'll keep updating it, like I do with my other apps. Business side: Lifetime pricing. $29.99 once until Dec 31 (then $34.99), no subscription. 7-day free trial, no card or email. After the trial the Balanced preset stays free. 14-day refund. It's not a medical device and I don't make medical claims. What's next: the pointer was the first step. Keyboard help is next. You can try the filter in your browser without installing anything: https://stillmouse.com/?ref=rd-sideproject-story#try And the landing page itself: https://stillmouse.com/?ref=rd-sideproject-story I'd love feedback on the landing page, and on whether the demo explains it well enough. submitted by /u/qupit [link] [comments]
