Bitcoin trades in a narrow range above and below $80,000.What would get the digital currency out of its rut?

Wait 5 sec.

Bitcoin has been moving lower since the September and October highs formed a ceiling near $87,374. The repeated failures near that level gave sellers a clearly defined area to lean against. Buyers had their opportunities to extend the upside, but they could not sustain a break. The price has since worked its way lower. However, the sellers have also run into a limit. The $80,000 area continues to attract buying interest, slowing the decline and leaving the digital currency trading in a narrow range above and below that key level. Sellers have the short-term technical advantage, but they still need to prove they can break the floor and stay below it.In the video above, I take a closer look at the technical levels defining the battle, what would open the door for more downside, and what buyers need to do to regain control. The September and October highs defined the ceilingThe repeated highs near $86,969 to $87,374 established an important ceiling. When multiple rallies stall in the same area, traders take notice. Sellers gain a level against which to define risk, while buyers know what needs to be broken to extend the trend higher.Since the last failure at that ceiling, the price has moved lower and is now trading below both its 100-hour moving average at $80,408 and its 200-hour moving average at $81,403.That keeps the short-term bias tilted toward the sellers. However, the support below has prevented them from turning that advantage into a more sustained move lower. The $80,000 area remains the downside barometerThe chart shows a well-tested swing area around $79,580 to $80,000. That area has acted as both support and resistance, making it a key barometer for traders. The number of tests matters. Buyers continue to defend the area, but each return also puts that support under pressure. For sellers, a brief dip below $80,000 is only a start. They need to push below the swing area and sustain the break. A move through $79,146 (the low from the weekend trade) would add to the downside momentum and give traders another reason to look toward the next major support cluster. That cluster includes:$76,052: The 38.2% retracement of the advance from the July low.$75,754: The 100-day moving average.$74,925: The lower swing support level.Together, those levels define a broader support zone between $74,925 and $76,052. With a retracement, a major daily moving average, and prior swing support converging, that area would become an important test if the current floor gives way. What would give buyers more control? The first step is to get back above the 100-hour moving average at $80,408 and stay above it. That would ease some of the immediate downside pressure. The more meaningful step would be a sustained move above the 200-hour moving average at $81,403. Clearing both moving averages would give buyers more control and provide a stronger technical foundation for a recovery toward $83,062, followed by $84,178.Until then, holding support helps the buyers keep a foothold, but they need to reclaim resistance to shift the bias.Bitcoin has a floor around $80,000 and moving-average resistance overhead. A sustained break below the floor would strengthen the sellers’ hand. A move back above both hourly moving averages would give buyers their opportunity to take back control. The technical ladder for BitcoinBelow is the technical ladder for bitcoin. WIth the curren price at $80,127 the price sits below the 100 hour MA but above the low of the swing area.  Traders are awaiting the next shove and run.   This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.
