Paola Mayor Jason Silvio has revealed that his personal bank account has been frozen after the local council appealed a development in the town’s Urban Conservation Area.In a Facebook post, Silvio said a developer had taken action against him following an appeal filed on behalf of the Paola Local Council. The dispute concerns a proposed development on Triq Ninu Cremona, involving the demolition of an existing property and the construction of a multi-storey building. The council had objected over concerns about the project’s impact on the historic area and a nearby protected church. However, the Planning Authority approved the application, prompting the council to appeal.According to the Labour Party, Silvio was personally served with a garnishee order in connection with his duties as mayor.Labour expressed its full solidarity, condemning what it described as “bullying tactics” against people serving their communities.Planning Minister Jonathan Attard and Local Government Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli also spoke out, describing the situation as unacceptable in a democratic society. The ministers said they were closely following the case and offering support, while Parliament works on strengthening the right to appeal planning decisions. They added that further legislative changes could be considered if necessary.Labour Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba also backed Silvio, arguing that challenging a development on behalf of a community should not expose public officials to intimidation.Silvio thanked his fellow councillors for their support and expressed hope that justice would prevail.Should mayors and local councils have stronger legal protection when challenging development permits?•
