Namibia to establish foot-and-mouth disease vaccine manufacturing plant

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water & Land Reform will be establishing a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine manufacturing plant to strengthen local vaccine production and reduce reliance on imports, particularly from Botswana.💉 Botswana remains Namibia’s largest supplier of FMD vaccines, having supplied more than 3.8 million doses valued at N$60.7 million under a three-year supply arrangement. The initiative comes after the new confirmed FMD outbreaks in the ||Kharas and Zambezi regions over these past few weeks. FMD is a highly contagious viral disease affecting cattle, sheep, goats and other livestock, causing illness and disrupting production and trade. The outbreak in ||Kharas led to the suspension of Namibia’s internationally recognised FMD-free-zone status and restrictions on beef exports to major international markets, including the European Union. submitted by /u/namibpulse [link] [comments]
