Arsenal Humiliated by League Two Fleetwood Town in Shock Carabao Cup Exit

Wait 5 sec.

Fleetwood Town 1-1 Arsenal (Fleetwood win 5-3 on penalties)Arsenal have crashed out of the Carabao Cup in extraordinary fashion, losing 5-3 on penalties to League Two Fleetwood Town after a thoroughly disappointing 1-1 draw at Highbury Stadium.Mikel Arteta’s side arrived in Lancashire as overwhelming favourites against a team sitting 18th in League Two, but what followed was an embarrassing evening for the Gunners. The drama started almost immediately when an unauthorised drone hovering above the pitch forced play to be suspended. Players were eventually called off before the match resumed.Unfortunately, Arsenal’s football proved almost as bizarre as the interruption.Fleetwood Stun Arsenal in a Dreadful First HalfDespite dominating possession, Arsenal struggled to create meaningful chances and were punished in the 21st minute when Aaron Loupalo-Bi shrugged off young Marli Salmon before firing past debutant Illan Meslier.Fleetwood Town were ahead, and deserved enormous credit for their determination.Arsenal’s response was frustrating. Viktor Gyökeres forced a save, Kai Havertz wasted a headed opportunity, and the Gunners repeatedly surrendered possession despite enjoying around 75% of the ball.At half-time, Arsenal trailed 1-0. Unbelievable!Arteta introduced Ben White and Martin Ødegaard after the break, and Arsenal finally began showing some urgency.Max Dowman forced a save before Havertz blazed the rebound over. Gyökeres eventually brought Arsenal level in the second half, offering hope that the Premier League champions might finally impose themselves. But Fleetwood refused to surrender.(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Dowman Sees Red as Arsenal Collapse in Penalty ShootoutArsenal continued pushing for a winner, with Dowman threatening again and Ødegaard adding creativity to the attack. Then came another disastrous moment. In the 85th minute, 16-year-old Dowman was shown a straight red card following an altercation, leaving Arsenal to finish the match with ten men.Even then, opportunities arrived. White and Ødegaard both had efforts saved, while Havertz failed to make the most of further chances.Fleetwood held firm, taking the contest to penalties.Ødegaard, Havertz and Gyökeres all converted for Arsenal, but Bruno Guimarães saw his spot-kick saved. Fleetwood made no mistake with their five penalties, completing a remarkable 5-3 shootout victory.Fleetwood’s players and supporters celebrated a historic upset, with supporters flooding the pitch. For Arsenal, there can be few excuses.Arteta rotated his squad with Sunday’s Premier League trip to Liverpool approaching, but the quality available should have been more than sufficient to overcome a struggling League Two side.Instead, Arsenal are out of a competition they reached the final of last season, and serious questions must be asked about the performance, the finishing and the discipline.Fleetwood deserve their moment. Arsenal deserve the criticism. Was this simply a disastrous cup night, or should Arteta take responsibility for one of Arsenal’s most embarrassing defeats in recent years?I have written this report and sit here still in a state of absolute disbelief…Join the conversation in the comments below.Michelle M_____________________________________________________________________________________________ADMIN COMMENTSo here are some simple rules which I must insist commenters follow….You agree not to give any personal abuse to other Arsenal fans.
