GGG: Record Sales Versus the Earnings DeclineGraco Inc.BATS:GGGSmalldikenergyGraco's third-quarter report contains two different comparisons: record sales rose 8%, while reported operating earnings fell 10%. Adjusted operating earnings rose 1% under the company's recast non-GAAP methodology. The share price then suffered a substantial gap lower after the release. This review separates the business bridge from the observed price response and from a conditional recovery map. It claims neither a position nor knowledge of the motive behind every trade. Macro: industrial demand is a business question, not a sector shortcut Graco operates in fluid and coating management equipment used in manufacturing, processing, construction and maintenance. Its exposure therefore runs through customers' project activity, equipment demand and willingness to invest, rather than simply through a broad industrial-market label. Interest rates and construction conditions can affect that spending, while product costs and pricing influence how sales become earnings. Those are transmission questions to investigate; an index move does not establish the company's next order result. The October 21 release covers the quarter ended September 25, 2026. Management said incoming organic orders increased 7% in the quarter and 4% year to date, and described end markets as mixed. Orders and recognized sales are different periods and measures. A stronger incoming-order comparison can support a demand question without establishing that all orders will convert at unchanged margins or on a particular timetable. The October 22 earnings call is already past in this October 27 review; it is not presented as a future catalyst. Fundamental: explain the comparison bridge before choosing a headline Quarterly net sales were $586.4 million versus $543.4 million, up 8% as rounded by the company. The release attributes four percentage points to organic growth and four percentage points to acquired operations. That split matters: the reported gain is not all organic, and the acquisition contribution does not establish the unit-demand growth of the legacy business. The figures are company-disclosed growth contributions, not an estimate created by dividing an acquisition's annual revenue into months. Reported operating earnings were $148.1 million versus $164.7 million, down 10%. The prior year included a $14.1 million gain from reducing the fair value of acquisition-related contingent consideration; that gain did not repeat. The absence of a prior gain affects the year-over-year reported comparison without being equivalent to an equal current-period cash operating charge. Acquisition costs were also $5.8 million versus $1.0 million, while acquired-intangible amortization was $7.0 million versus $7.1 million. The company's reconciliation reaches adjusted operating earnings of $160.9 million versus $158.7 million, up 1% on its rounded presentation. For the current quarter, $148.1 million plus $5.8 million of acquisition costs plus $7.0 million of amortization gives $160.9 million. For the prior quarter comparison, $164.7 million plus $1.0 million plus $7.1 million minus $14.1 million gives $158.7 million. Using these rounded figures makes the bridge visible; it does not turn an adjusted measure into GAAP or eliminate acquisition economics. Graco updated this non-GAAP methodology beginning in the second quarter of 2026 and recast prior periods. The company says price realization offset higher product costs in the third quarter. Reported net earnings were $121.6 million versus $137.6 million; adjusted net earnings were $131.3 million versus $129.1 million. Reported diluted EPS was $0.75 versus $0.82, while adjusted EPS was $0.81 versus $0.77. Diluted shares averaged 163.0 million versus 168.6 million, and the company repurchased $132 million of shares during the quarter. EPS and total earnings therefore need separate comparisons. The operating mix is also informative. Contractor sales were $276.032 million versus $262.428 million, Industrial $264.623 million versus $238.591 million, and Expansion Markets $45.730 million versus $42.339 million. All three grew sales, but Industrial operating earnings were $74.452 million versus $80.733 million. Sales growth across segments is not proof of uniform profit improvement. Management expects fourth-quarter revenue of $610 million to $640 million; that is guidance, not an achieved result, and no independently verified next reporting date is assumed. Technical: the gap is observed; the explanation still has limits The genuine daily chart observed around 17:08 Chicago shows October 27 open $66.70, high $67.41, low $66.20 and close/last $66.46, up $0.39 or 0.59%. The candle closed below its open despite a positive daily comparison with the preceding $66.07 close. On October 22, after the release, the stock opened $73.11, reached $74.50, fell to $67.735 and closed $69.28, down 15.32%. That timing establishes an observed post-release response, not a proven single-cause attribution. The selected decline runs from October 16's $82.97 high to October 26's $65.96 low, a $17.01 range. Recovery levels from the low are $69.9744, $72.4578, $74.4650, $76.4722 and $79.3299 at 23.6%, 38.2%, the arithmetic 50% midpoint, 61.8% and 78.6%. The 55 EMA is $77.2590 versus $77.6589 in the preceding session, falling and above price. RSI is 24.51 versus 23.05. A low RSI reading does not independently confirm a reversal. For repair, require a completed daily close above $69.9744 and a separate held retest. The next four checkpoints are $72.4578, $74.4650, $76.4722 and $79.3299. Losing the reclaimed boundary defeats the immediate attempt; losing $65.96 challenges the wider repair. For weakness, require a completed close below $65.96 followed by a failed reclaim, with calculated extensions $61.3333 and $55.4478. A held recovery of $65.96 defeats that immediate rejection; sustained acceptance above $82.97 challenges the selected decline. Gaps and slippage can exceed a planned boundary. Which evidence would matter more to your next review: conversion of the organic-order growth into earnings or a confirmed reclaim of the first recovery level?
