Binance has reported a major security incident with an estimated financial impact of approximately $6.3 billion. It raises questions about the security of its internal infrastructure and transaction authorization systems. In an update shared through its official channels, the cryptocurrency exchange said its initial investigation points to a potentially compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker may have used access to the device to enter a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawals.Binance says it has found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked and is continuing its investigation to establish the full details of the incident. The exchange has also begun coordinating with blockchain partners and law enforcement agencies to freeze affected assets and investigate the unlawful activity. How Did the Binance Security Incident Happen? As per Binance’s preliminary findings, the incident may have begun from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker reportedly used the access gained through the device to enter a service container, which then enabled the submission of unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange has not yet released a complete technical explanation of how the attacker compromised the laptop or bypassed the relevant security controls. It stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that the initial findings are subject to further verification. Binance specifically stated that it had found no evidence of a wallet private key leak. This distinction is crucial because the exchange’s preliminary explanation points towards a possible compromise of its internal development and operational environment rather than confirmed exposure of wallet credentials. The estimated total impact stands at approximately 6.3 billion dollars. Binance said it has been working with blockchain partners to freeze the affected assets, with around 3 billion dollars frozen on-chain so far. The exchange has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of the affected assets or the transactions involved. It said a comprehensive technical post-mortem would be published once the investigation is complete and the findings have been fully verified.Binance Suspends Withdrawals and Commits to Covering LossesAs an immediate precaution, Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while its teams conducted extra security checks. The exchange also revoked the affected address authorization to prevent further unauthorized activity through the compromised access route. Binance said it had engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence partners to track the affected funds and support recovery efforts. Its teams are also working to establish the identity of those accountable and cooperate with authorities. The exchange stated that it would cover all losses resulting from the incident through its Secure Asset Fund for Users ( SAFU) and company funds. It also reassured customers that user funds are safe. In addition, Binance said it would publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation process is complete. Proof of Reserves is intended to provide data about an exchange’s holdings relative to customer balances. Although, it is separate from a detailed investigation into the cause and scope of a security incident. The exchange has asked users to depend on its official communication channels for further updates and contact customer support if they have queries. For now, multiple details remain unconfirmed, including the precise attack method, the full composition of the affected assets, and whether all frozen funds can be recovered. Binance has said it will provide a detailed technical postmortem after completing its investigation. Until then, the reported DevOps laptop compromise remains
