I play on my Mac, but the good stuff lives on a gaming PC in the other room. Remote desktop apps always felt like remote desktop: open a client, find the PC, wake it, log in, look at a Windows desktop. So I'm building Overtoaster. Every game installed on the PC becomes an actual app on the Mac, with its cover as the icon, in Spotlight, Launchpad and the Dock. Click it and: the PC wakes up (Wake-on-LAN, ~20 s), the game starts on the PC, it opens in a normal Mac window: ⌘Tab, move it, full screen, ⌘Q quits the game. The video is a real run, cut down: the waiting is sped up and player names are blurred. The overlay is the built-in stats: ~100 fps at 1440p AV1, under 20 ms from the PC's picture to the Mac's picture on my home network (PC on Ethernet). Why not Moonlight/Sunshine or Parsec? They're great, and I used them. This is less a streaming client and more "the PC's games are Mac apps": no client to open, no PC to pick, it wakes the PC itself, and windows of PC programs can come over one by one too. Needs: Apple silicon Mac on macOS 26, a Windows 11 PC with an NVIDIA card (GTX 16 / RTX 20 or newer). AMD and Intel are on the list. Under the hood: Swift on the Mac, Rust on the PC and in a shared core, my own streaming protocol over QUIC, AV1/HEVC through NVENC. It's just me building it. Closed beta starts in January; there's a waiting list at overtoaster.dev and a small Discord. I'd love to hear what you'd want from something like this, and what would make you not use it. https://reddit.com/link/1xhwseq/video/vmooo0wllvxh1/player submitted by /u/omnic_ [link] [comments]
