1976 Chouinard Equipment / Patagonia climbing pants AKA ‘standup pants’

Wait 5 sec.

Sorry for re-upload, I don’t use Reddit often and made a typo I thought I could fix without reposting. Recently acquired these deadstock (never worn) climbing pants and wanted to show them off to people who might appreciate them. I included some old catalog photos from Great Pacific Iron Works showing original price and even an ad for them in Ski Hut. First introduced in 1976 as a part of Chouinard Equipment’s ‘software’ line, (dubbed Patagonia after founder Yvon Chouinard’s life changing experience at Mount Fitz Roy in Argentina) the climbing pants were designed in part from Yvon’s time as an avid outdoorsman and from his recent experiences in iron forges. After the huge success of their standup shorts (named as such because the heavy fabric construction let the shorts stand up on their own) they debuted the ‘Chouinard Climbing Pants’ in 1976 for only $20.00. People loved these pants when they released, which may have been the final push needed for Yvon to go all out on Patagonia over the next year, shifting much of their business model towards their garments rather than climbing equipment. The very next year in 1977, the price of these pants (as well as many other soft goods) increased, while also sporting full Patagonia branding. This pair is the early 1976 release, sporting a ‘C’ Chouinard logo button and thigh tab. submitted by /u/romance_archive to r/PatagoniaClothing [link] [comments]
