I built a Dynamic Island for Windows in Rust: music, clipboard, timers and coding agents, and it uses nothing while idle

Hey r/SideProject! I've spent the last few days building ReUI, a small black island at the top of the Windows screen, like the Dynamic Island on iPhones and the notch apps on Mac. It shows what's going on and lets you act on it without leaving the window you're in: Now Playing: works with Spotify, browsers, VLC or anything in Windows' media controls. It has artwork, a timeline you can scrub, controls, volume and optional synced lyrics. Swipe on the pill to skip a track. Clipboard history (Win+Alt+V): text, images, files, links and colours you can search and paste with Enter. It never saves passwords or tokens and it stays on your PC. Timers and reminders (Win+Ctrl+T): type 10m tea or every day 21:00 meds. They survive sleep and restarts. Calls: works in Teams, Zoom, Discord, Slack and others, with the running time and a mic mute that works in every app. Mic, camera and screen indicators: a coloured dot the moment an app starts using one of them. Devices: Bluetooth battery levels, low-battery warnings and Eject for USB drives. Volume and brightness pop-ups: can replace Windows' own, and include a per-app mixer. Downloads, screenshots and a drag-and-drop shelf for files and text. Coding agents: Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode show up in the island when they need you, and you can approve permission requests from it. What I cared about most is that it stays out of the way. It's a native Rust app (no Electron) and it follows Windows' events instead of polling, so it draws nothing while nothing changes. Outside its own shape it lets clicks through, including your browser tabs above it. You can hide it until something needs you, set rules per app, or turn off any kind of activity. The installer doesn't need admin rights, it updates itself from GitHub releases, and it's MIT/Apache-2.0. What would you want a Windows island to show? submitted by /u/PostLeast [link] [comments]
