Emiliano Martinez has revealed he is still ‘playing with pain’ after refusing surgery on a broken finger to star at the World Cup.The Chelsea goalkeeper has only recently gone under the knife to correct a shattered jaw sustained during the 2-0 win away to Everton.Martinez lost consciousness following his injury, with the goalkeeper immediately rushed to hospitalGettyHowever, Martinez has now confirmed he is still nursing an existing injury that plagued him throughout the World Cup this summer. The 34-year-old played every minute of the tournament for Argentina despite being in agonising pain while in North America.Martinez broke his finger during the warm-up before helping Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg in May.Although he played the entirety of the 3-0 victory, the ex-Arsenal man’s World Cup bid was in doubt after seeing his X-ray results.Martinez says finger ‘won’t ever return’ to normalMartinez, who would have been ruled out for six weeks and thus missed the tournament if he had undergone surgery, instead made the decision not to have an operation on the affected finger. The 2022 World Cup winner donned custom Adidas gloves for extra protection, but would still ‘see stars’ due to the severe pain.Martinez admitted his finger ‘would have gone back to normal’ if he had had surgery instantly, but now ‘it won’t ever return’ to being how it was, with the bone ‘out of place’.Speaking on journalist Gaston Edul’s YouTube channel, he said: “I broke my finger in the Europa League final. When the doctor showed me the X-ray, I started crying because I thought I would miss the World Cup.“[Argentina coach Lionel] Scaloni messaged me and said: ‘Whether you make it or not, I’ll back you… come anyway’.Martinez wore custom gloves after refusing to have surgery to play at the World CupGettyView Tweet: https://t.co/hBmRCm32MS“We decided not to have surgery. Adidas made me a special glove, and I played with my finger completely wrapped. I could only feel four fingers.“I couldn’t even train with normal footballs. I trained with volleyballs until the Switzerland game.”“I was diving like a zombie,” Martinez continued. “I dived like that, I got up and I put my hand down and I’d see stars … every night, until 12am, I’d be crying because my finger was like a blood sausage.”He added: “Those are the risks you take for the national team; I’d do it again.”Martinez ultimately helped Argentina reach the World Cup final, but was powerless to prevent a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain.Following the tournament, Juventus agreed an £8.5million package offer to sign him, with the goalkeeper informing Villa that he wanted to leave and join Juve in June.Martinez has kept one clean sheet and conceded 11 goals in six appearances for ChelseaGettyThat proposed transfer broke down, with Martinez revealing his finger injury was the reason why, as he instead joined Chelsea. He said: “They said it was impossible for me to play like that, that I needed surgery. “Chelsea didn’t mind… (but) someday you will need an operation.”Martinez, meanwhile, is said to be optimistic about returning from his broken jaw sooner than Xabi Alonso’s timeline of ‘a few weeks’.
