Gary Neville was full of praise for Arsenal’s defensive performance after Mikel Arteta’s side secured a historic 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday evening.Kai Havertz’s 16th-minute goal proved decisive as the Gunners ended their 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Liverpool’s ground, moving three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table. But while Havertz will deservedly take the headlines for his winning goal, it was Arsenal’s collective defensive display that particularly impressed the former Manchester United defender.Neville Praises Arsenal’s Defensive OrganisationSpeaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the match, Neville delivered a glowing assessment of Arsenal’s defensive performance.“It’s been a defensive masterclass from Arsenal,” Neville declared. It was a remarkable achievement against a Liverpool side desperate to get back into the contest after falling behind early. The hosts enjoyed extended spells of possession and registered 17 attempts on goal, yet struggled to create clear opportunities against Arteta’s well-organised defence.Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free-kick, while Alexis Mac Allister missed a promising headed opportunity, but Arsenal largely restricted Liverpool to efforts that failed to seriously trouble David Raya.Gabriel and Ezri Konsa were particularly important in the heart of Arsenal’s defence, with Declan Rice providing further protection in midfield. The determination and discipline on display demonstrated why Arsenal have become such difficult opponents to break down.(Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)Arsenal Send Another Message to Their Title RivalsWhat makes Neville’s assessment particularly significant is the importance of the occasion.Arsenal had not won a Premier League match at Anfield since September 2012, when Arteta himself was still playing for the Gunners. As we discussed in our confirmed Arsenal team announcement ahead of the Liverpool clash, Arteta had several important selection decisions to make, particularly following the disappointing Carabao Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town. His players responded with a performance built on discipline, resilience and the ability to take their opportunity when it arrived. It was also an encouraging response from Havertz, whose recent form had attracted questions.Manchester City’s defeat to Brighton on Saturday had presented Arsenal with a tremendous opportunity, and they took full advantage. There will undoubtedly be more spectacular attacking performances this season, but victories like this could prove just as important when the title race reaches its conclusion.Neville’s verdict underlines something Arsenal supporters have increasingly recognised. This is a team capable of winning difficult matches through defensive strength as well as attacking quality. And after 14 years without a league victory at Anfield, that resilience has finally delivered three enormous points.Do you agree with Gary Neville that Arsenal produced a defensive masterclass?
