Hi everyone, I’m an RN6 working for NSW Health and recently started a permanent position in an outpatient clinic at a hospital in Sydney. I’ve been in the role for less than a month, and unfortunately, I’m already questioning whether I’ve made the right decision. For context, I previously worked as a casual RN at another hospital within the same LHD and absolutely loved the workplace culture and team. I also have experience working as a crit care travel nurse, so I’m used to adapting to different environments and working with different personalities. However, since starting this new role, I’ve had several uncomfortable interactions with colleagues. There have been instances where I’ve been publicly criticised or spoken to in ways that I felt were unnecessarily antagonising - to the point where patients have apologised to me after witnessing how some of the nurses had spoken to me. Might be hard to believe but most of this behaviour I’m experiencing is totally out of the blue. I’m absolutely open to constructive feedback and understand that every department has its own policies and practices, but I believe there’s a professional and respectful way to communicate these things. It’s reached a point where I’m tired of pulling people aside and explain how their behaviour isn’t appropriate. I’m now anxious about going to work, and it’s just not sustainable for me in the long run. I understand that starting somewhere new can be challenging, and I’m trying to be fair in my assessment rather than making a rushed decision. However, having worked in several hospitals and teams, I also know what a supportive workplace feels like, and something about this environment doesn’t feel right to me. I’ve recently been offered a perm position in the previous hospital I was at and loved, but this whole process of interviewing and onboarding takes ages and I don’t know if I can wait that long. I’m seriously considering requesting a transfer back to my old hospital as a casual. I’d really appreciate advice from nurses who have been in a similar situation, particularly within NSW Health. Has anyone successfully transferred to another hospital within the same LHD while still on probation? Would I need to resign from my current position and be rehired, or is an internal transfer possible? Would you recommend raising concerns about workplace culture with the NUM, and/or HR? I do have evidence and witnesses. If you’ve dealt with a workplace that felt unsupportive early on, what would be your advice? I’m not looking to burn bridges, and I genuinely want to handle this professionally. I just don’t want to feel obligated to remain in an environment that isn’t a good fit simply because I’ve only recently started. Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/Major_Strike4042 [link] [comments]
