Considering quitting my nurse residency program but I can't tell what's normal and what isn't.

Wait 5 sec.

Hello all, new grad RN here. In August I started nurse residency at a big name hospital that will look amazing on any resume (think Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, etc). Most of the people in my program are just new grads from Cali who are trying to get a year of experience and get the name on their resume and then leave to greener pastures. When I got this job I felt so incredibly proud. When I applied to this job I didn't even think I would get it. I kind of just applied as a "let me see what sticks" thinking there's no way I'd ever hear anything from such a prestigious hospital. Well joke was on me, I had a hard offer within a week which I accepted very quickly. Flash forward to now (started in August). I'm exhausted and burnt out and everyone keeps telling me I'm "too new to be burnt out" so fresh in but adapting to how patients treat me and, worse, their families treat me, has been so hard. I've been yelled at, cussed at, hit, etc. They schedule me for NRP classes and meetings in the day but work for a night shift so I don't sleep. I will have a mandatory class in the day then have to go work a night shift, and have met others who come off a night shift and go straight into a class, essentially working 21 hours straight (12 hour shift with a 1 hour break that I rarely get to take, followed by 8 hours of class). I feel like I'm drinking information from a firehouse all why my preceptors are upset that I can't do tasks that I'm honestly mad I didn't learn how to do in nursing school. I feel like I'm getting hazed but keep telling myself it's in my head. All the float nurses I talk to say that my unit is their least favorite and they actively ask not to be sent here. When I transfer patients to other units this probably sounds stupid but it feels like a vibe shift. Like the physical feeling is calmer and kinder and softer somehow. I already have another offer lined up but can't start there for a few months and I have the ability to not work for a few months because of my spouse. It would be a massive quality of life hit but I am so tired. I don't have to accept the new offer and I actually think the workload will be even higher, but the patient population will be way different and the pay at the other job is even higher. I guess my concern is if I'm just running away from problems that are inevitable. I can't tell if it's normal to feel so bullied and tired and overwhelmed and isolated as a new grad. Can anyone provide any insight? I'll take any at this point. Thanks in advance, guys. submitted by /u/Cheeky_Edge311 [link] [comments]
