Newcastle are playing like a relegation team and Matthias Jaissle is in danger of the sack

Newcastle are freefalling into a relegation battle and it’s not clear what Matthias Jaissle is trying to do with the team. This is the view of former Premier League striker Dean Ashton, who suggested the Magpies will spend their season looking down rather than up. Everton have beaten Newcastle twice in five daysGettyIt’s four defeats in five in all competitions for Newcastle, who suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton on Monday night. Thierno Barry’s goal early in the second half consigned Newcastle, who finished the game with ten men due to Jacob Ramsey’s red card, to yet another defeat. Jaissle was only appointed Magpies boss in the summer but there are already question marks over his credentials with the club languishing in 13th in the Premier League, and they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by the Toffees last week. But what’s most concerning for them is the performance level, according to Ashton, who believes Jaissle was lucky with some positive results for the early part of the season. Ashton: Jaissle in danger of sackWhen asked if Jaissle was in trouble, Ashton told talkSPORT: “If you’re going off performances you would say so. You can’t see it continuing the way. they’re kind of outperforming their XG in particular. “I think he’s got lucky at the start of the season with some results.that’s kind of taken the heat off. “But if you watched a couple of their performances, they look more like a relegation-threatened team than a team that’s going to be comfortable in the Premier League. Tonight, that’s how it felt. “Too many poor performances, a real lack of quality, no real idea.Because sometimes with new managers I can expect poor performances. “I can expect the players to maybe not have a great game. But what I want to at least see is, I can see what the manager wants to do. I can see exactly what he wants here from his players. I didn’t see it. “And you could sense the crowd didn’t feel it. He could probably get a few back on side if he started to pick some of those exciting players. Sean Steur, Bazouma Toure, they were probably the best players.”Newcastle have won just three of their nine Premier League matches this seasonGettyNewcastle have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 14 home league games; the longest run in their league historyGettyGameDay host Adrian Durham added: “They [Newcastle fans] are right to boo at the end. And he’s got some serious work to do with that caveat that I said before. He came in very late in the summer, didn’t he?“So I think he deserves to be cut a little bit of slack for that. But any wonder Newcastle fans aren’t happy. Any clearer on what the plan A is for Newcastle or even the plan B for Newcastle?”Ashton responded: “No, I think the only thread of positivity was probably Harvey Barnes. The one player that looked like he had the quality at this level. “The rest of that forward line scares me a little bit to think how they’re going to go in the Premier League.“And whether he gets the chance to get to January, I’d like to see them give him a bit of help in January.”Jaissle understands fan angerThe German didn’t sugar coat how disappointed he was with the performance on Monday night, insisting he understands why some fans booed off his players.Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe at the helm, arriving from Saudi club Al AhliGettyOn the anger from Newcastle fans, Jaissle said: “Of course, I can understand it after a performance like that. That’s the reality and I am responsible for that.“We need to work again and again and again on what we need to improve and after today that’s a lot. “It’s complex, now we analyse the game in detail. Then we dig out what caused our problems and what we can do better.“It’s not only me talking, it’s me listening about the things we can do better.”Newcastle’s next outing is a clash at home to Fulham on Saturday with a tough run of fixtures awaiting after the November international break. Their first game back is a clash at home to Arsenal before they travel to Brighton. They then entertain Manchester United and that game is followed by the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.
