Hey so I’m not sure if we need to legalize challenging someone to mortal combat or bring back public punishment, but people’s/patient’s behavior has gotten COMPLETELY out of control. Obviously I’m joking about public dueling and punishment, but I think you know the point I’m trying to make. It’s not just being rude, it’s straight up insults, profanity, threats. It’s beyond unacceptable and the tolerance for it has gone too far. I had a patient a few months ago, older guy, but completely oriented and well aware of what was happening, and he’s just awful from the start. I’m a male nurse so I often get put with the patients who are behavioral, and I’ve learned to deal with it. Midway through the shift, transport comes to the room to bring him down to CT. Me and the transporter slide the patient into the other bed because his back hurts too bad to stand. Evidently we didn’t move him gently enough because this patient straight up drops the hard R at the transporter, who, you guessed it, is black. Even though the transporter guy was able to keep himself collected and chose not to engage further. I end up absolutely laying into the patient about his behavior and even ended up calling security to talk to him. Look, I am in no way advocating for violence, but all I could think about during that entire exchange was how if we were in the wild, living as animals, that transporter could have taken that patient’s life with his bare hands. Like at the end of the day the highest point of human conflict is violence, and I think too many people in modern life forget that is still on the table if a conflict becomes serious enough. An elderly man who is in too much pain/weak to get out of bed should NOT feel comfortable talking to younger more physically fit men like that. I have several female colleagues who have had their looks insulted, like directly and specifically. Comments about weight, you name it. It’s crazy and way too normalized in healthcare. I get it, it sucks being in the hospital. You’re sick and you’re being stuck with needles and woken up in the middle of the night, but people CANNOT act like this. I hope you all agree submitted by /u/Illustrious_Ask_35 [link] [comments]
