I built QuizFirst, a Chrome extension that tells you which parts of a YouTube video you can skip

Wait 5 sec.

Hi r/SideProject. I'm the solo maker of QuizFirst, a free Chrome extension for YouTube. I'd like honest feedback from people who build things. What it is for Long videos waste a lot of time on things you already know. Lectures, tutorials, talks. You either sit through all of it or you scrub around and miss the one part you needed. What it does On a YouTube video, QuizFirst adds a small quiz bar next to the player. You take a short multiple-choice quiz before watching. Each question is tied to a timestamp in the video. When you're done, it shows which parts you already know (skip them) and which parts to watch. Every explanation points at the exact moment: "At 2:22, the presenter...". It reads the video's captions and uses Claude to write the questions, so it only works on videos that have captions. Quizzes are in English. What a learner gets A student revising from a lecture recording skips the half they already know. Someone learning from tutorials finds out in two minutes whether the video is worth 40. A teacher can take the quiz on a video before showing it, and save the questions and answers as a PDF. Free to try, no account needed A 5-question quiz works without signing up. A free account gives you 10- and 20-question quizzes, 5 quizzes a day, and progress tracking. Paid plans aren't live yet. Why I built it When I watch a video to learn something, half of it is stuff I already know. I get why: the creator has to cover the basics for people who don't know them. But when you're digging into one specific topic, you don't need the basics again in every video. I needed a way to tell the computer what I already know about a video and filter out the rest, and the simplest way to give it that information is a quiz. It's a simple A minus B. What was hard The hardest parts were getting captions out of YouTube reliably and getting through Chrome Web Store review. I built it solo, with a small team of AI agents. Stack, for the curious: Chrome extension (Manifest V3, Vite), FastAPI backend, Claude API for the questions. Links Try it Chrome Web Store What I'd like to know from you Does "quiz first, then watch" make sense to you, or would you rather have the quiz after the video? Which kind of video did you try it on, and did the questions match what the video is actually about? If you build extensions: is there anything in the install or first-run flow that put you off? What would make you come back a second time? I'll be here in the comments. Thanks for looking. submitted by /u/mercury200Hg [link] [comments]
