As launching a new feature, I made the old paid feature free. Is this a stupid marketing choice?

Wait 5 sec.

My current marketing plan is apparently to change for fewer things. I made Wallpets. Its a desktop wallpaper app where cats, dogs, gorillas, fennec foxes and other animals look at your cursor, do their own thing, or fall asleep while you're working. The video is the basic idea. A slightly wierd thing to spend time building, but here we are. Until this release, one cat and one dog were free. The rest of the catalog, now 190+ animals, needed a $7.99 in-app unlock. Sold around 2700 copies for 3 months since launch. Today, I just launched new feature: Custom Lab, where you can turn photos of your own pet into a Custom Pet. That's an optional $24.99 one-time purchase per pet on Mac or Windows, with no subscription. I was not sure how to promote this new feature, thus, I decided to try making the entire existing desktop catalog free at the same time. No unlock purchase or code needed in the new version. The thinking is pretty simple: let people actually live with the app first. Maybe someone enjoys having a random cat on their desktop, then wants their actual cat there. And if they're happy with the free animals, that's fine too. I wanted to try this becuase a useful free thing feels like a better introduction than another feature announcement. I am quite nervous now. I hope this marketing method works and will not prove that I have made the stupidest choice Ive done in my life. Anyone here tried giving away an older paid feature when launching a new feature? Did it help people understand the product, or mainly bring in people who were only there for the free part? submitted by /u/snuffdog_reddit [link] [comments]
