The Vaal dams are 98% full, but Joburg is drawing about 15% more than Rand Water’s temporary target (Rand Water figures, 27 Oct)

Wait 5 sec.

Pulled together the two official datasets people keep arguing about: Dams: DWS says the Vaal river system was 98,2% full on 26 October (the Vaal Dam itself at 106,1%). This isn’t a dam shortage. Demand: Rand Water’s own table for 27 October has Johannesburg drawing about 1 756 megalitres a day, against a temporary target of 1 528 (about 15% over) and a permanent target of 1 356 (about 30% over). Caveat: these are one-day, approximate figures, and they can’t separate what households use from what leaks out of the network before it reaches a meter. Neither dataset explains outages inside the city’s own pipes and reservoirs.
