A Pennsylvania mom says a quick bathroom break with her 5-year-old daughter reportedly turned into a frustrating experience after they returned to their table at a Philadelphia diner and discovered all their belongings were gone. Her wallet, car keys, jacket, and even her daughter’s stuffed animals had apparently disappeared in the few minutes they were away. Kumbah Sarnor shared the incident in a TikTok video after visiting Silk City Diner in Philadelphia. She claimed that she and her daughter were still eating and had not even paid their bill when the little girl needed to use the restroom. According to Sarnor, the pair were gone for only about three minutes, leaving their belongings on the table while they stepped away. When they returned, however, the table had apparently been completely cleared. “We come back to the table. Nothing’s on the table. The table is completely empty,” Sarnor recalled. “Not her stuffed animals. Not my jacket. Not my wallet. Not my car keys.” Her things were apparently in the trash Sarnor furiously asked an employee where everything had gone and said she was allegedly told the items “may have gone in the trash,” after which the employee began retrieving her belongings from the garbage. But the situation reportedly became even more upsetting when other customers told Sarnor that the employee had used her daughter’s stuffed animals to wipe down the table before throwing them away. Sarnor said she did not witness that herself, but was shocked by what she was told. “Why are you wiping down a dirty table with my child’s stuffed animals?” she questioned. She also claimed the employee told her to be more conscious of what she left behind, explaining that much of his job involved throwing things away. Several commenters who said they had restaurant experience added that diners routinely leave personal items at their tables when using the restroom. They argued that even if a customer accidentally leaves something behind, valuables such as wallets and keys should be treated as lost property rather than thrown away. In an Instagram post, Silk City Diner apologized for the incident, calling the employee’s actions “unacceptable” and saying they did not reflect the restaurant’s standards. “We want to make things right. We understand why emotions are high. We are not asking anyone to dismiss their feelings. We are asking for the chance to handle this responsibly and with care,” the diner wrote in the post. They also confirmed that the employee involved is no longer employed there. “Following the review of the incident, the employee involved is no longer employed by Silk City,” the management assured. According to the U.S. Legal Forms, “mislaid property is an item that a person intentionally leaves in a specific location but later forgets about. This occurs when the owner places the property somewhere with the intention of retrieving it later, but cannot find it when they return.” While laws are different for each state when it comes to handling mislaid property, if such a case occurs,” the finder has a duty to return the item to the owner of the premises.”
