Canelo Alvarez has two perfect options for next fight who could face tug of war

Canelo Alvarez will likely choose between Hamzah Sheeraz and Lester Martinez next. That is the view of Paulie Malignaggi, who has outlined to talkSPORT.com about what lays in store next for Alvarez.Canelo is now at an interesting stage of his career, with one fight remaining on his Saudi promotional dealThe Mexican legend put on an impressive display to beat WBC super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli and snatch his world title back in his comeback fight.British super-middleweight Sheeraz, WBC interim title holder Martinez and IBF champion Osley Iglesias all watched on ringside. All three of the 168lbers have expressed their desire to face the now three-time super-middleweight champion next. But Malignaggi believes it will be KO artist Iglesias that misses out despite the possibility of a unification, with Sheeraz to potentially benefit by name recognition. He explained: “I saw that they were all ringside. So it does look like it’s the sweepstakes for who’s going to get Canelo next if he wins.“I think, personally, the guys with the best opportunity are going to be Sheeraz and Martinez.“Iglesias, I feel like, is a guy that doesn’t bring enough to the table for Canelo to want to take the risk against such a good fighter.“I think Sheeraz may be a frontrunner because he has the connections with the Middle East crew including Turki Alalshikh, and they still like him and he is under contract with them.“Lester Martinez is a WBC interim super middleweight champion. He also has the draw with Mbilli to his name, and does deserve a shot, so I think they may be in a battle for it.”Sheeraz doesn’t have a world title to bring to the table having vacated it recently.Sheeraz is open to facing Alvarez and is adjoined to Alalshikh in the same vein as CaneloGettyBut Alvarez’s final fight is expected to be in Riyadh in February or March, and the towering Briton has a good relationship with Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh. He has faced injuries in recent times and opted not to face Janibek Alimkhanuly, a sign that he is willing to wait and face the Mexican.A clash between the pair may bring the biggest payday right now in a division that is bereft of superstars, and more up-and-coming names.‘Sheeraz is an awkward fight for Canelo’The 6ft 3ins former world champion is a different fight for Alvarez, which would present far different challenges than Mbilli. And Malignaggi believes that would be a more awkward affair than if he faced Martinez, who holds a similar style. He continued: “I think Turki likes Hamzah and may get him this fight, but I will say this, Hamzah is a more difficult fight for Canelo than Martinez at the moment. I think Lester [Martinez], stylistically, is a lot like Canelo.Watch Boxing on DAZN*If you click a link in this boxout, we will earn affiliate revenueSign up to DAZN to access the definitive subscription for boxing fans.Upgrade to DAZN Ultimate from just £24.99/month, guaranteeing access to 185+ fights annually, a minimum of 12 pay-per-views at no extra cost, as well as every Lega Serie A match and other elite football access.Alternatively, DAZN Standard is just £15.99/month, with the caveat you will have to pay for pay-per-view events.Click here to sign up.“He doesn’t throw a lot of jabs. So I think Canelo may have noticed all this, and he may be on the side of saying, ‘I’ve got the WBC world championship and this guy’s the WBC interim champion’.“Stylistically, he does match up well, but I think Sheeraz has the slightly bigger name at this point.”Outside options could be revisited including Jake Paul or even Chris Eubank Jr, who is expected to return in 2027.They would likely bring the biggest commercial big bucks, but with one fight left on his contract, it may not matter for now.
