Toby Alderweireld has revealed the two moments in his career that still haunt him, and one of them involves Tottenham Hotspur. The Belgian centre-back spent the best part of his career wearing the Lilywhite of Tottenham Hotspur, doing so for six seasons. In that time, he made an impressive 174 Premier League appearances and 234 appearances in all competitions for Spurs, forming one of the best defensive partnerships in the league with Jan Vertonghen.Sadly, though, silverware eluded the Belgian despite him being part of the golden generation under Mauricio Pochettino. The centre-back did come close to silverware a few times during his time at Spurs, having played in the 2019 Champions League final and the 2021 Carabao Cup final, games in which he ended up on the wrong side of history.Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP via Getty ImagesFormer Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld reveals Champions League regretSpeaking to BBC Sport on Halloween, Alderweireld, who is now a Match of the Day pundit, was asked what still haunts him today. The former Tottenham man did not hold back, revealing that his two Champions League final defeats are moments that still cause him pain.Back in the 2013/14 season, the Belgian lost his first Champions League final with Atletico Madrid, as Real Madrid beat them 4-1.Alderweireld came off the bench in the 83rd minute, with Atletico manager Diego Simeone bringing him on to replace left-back Filipe Luis – a tactical substitution designed to lock down the defence and secure a 1-0 victory. However, what followed was heartbreak, with Sergio Ramos grabbing a 93rd-minute equaliser to force extra time, where Atletico crumbled. He said: “I lost two Champions League finals, and especially the first one, was with one minute to play. So every time I watch a final I think, ‘Ah, I could have won it as well,’ you know. Of course, I’m proud that I played two finals, but I lost them both, so it’ll haunt me forever.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Match of the Day (@bbcfootball)Alderweireld’s Spurs legacy goes beyond final heartbreakWhile he missed out on silverware with Tottenham, Alderweireld still had a very successful career in England. He picked up a few personal accolades, including:PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2015/16Tottenham Player of the Year in 2015/16Part of the Spurs defence that set a club record in 2016/17, conceding just 26 goals, the fewest in the Premier League that seasonChampions League Squad of the Season in 2018/19, after Spurs’ run to the finalSpurs also gave him one of his most cherished memories on the way to the 2019 final, when they beat one of his former sides, Ajax, a moment he admitted left him feeling strange. He said: “We lost the first leg of the semi-final 1-0 at home, then were 2-0 down at half-time in Amsterdam. We needed to score three, and we weren’t playing well – I thought ‘I want to go home, this is not going to happen’.”Lucas Moura went on to complete his hat-trick to send Tottenham through, and while Alderweireld enjoyed every moment, he admits it felt a little strange. He continued: “When he got the third in the last minute, it was unbelievable. To kill the dream of my former club was a strange feeling. They gave me my education and made me a pro, so I’ll always be grateful.“But football is like that, and I was happy – I was going to a Champions League final.”READ MORE: Luca Williams-Barnett reveals old-school thought he had just before Tottenham debutThe post Tottenham icon Toby Alderweireld reveals two career moments will haunt him forever appeared first on Spurs Web.
