Henry Beeby's case for more Irish vendors looking to the horses-in-training section of the Autumn Sale was strengthened by four horses selling for six figures on Monday, headed by the €360,000 Almazann (Zarak) to Willie Mullins and Harold Kirk. Trained by Dermot Weld, Almazann headed the ever-popular Aga Khan draft, which accounted for €691,500 of the €2,201,500 traded during the horses-in-training section. He boasted a rating of 87 after getting off the mark at the sixth attempt in a Curragh maiden over 1m4f last time.Kirk said, “We have been very, very lucky with Zarak. He is one of my favourite sires; he's a Group 1 sire on the Flat and a Grade 1 sire over jumps. He ticks every box. This is a gorgeous horse. He's 16.2, which I love. He'll be a top-class hurdles horse and a top-class staying Flat horse.”The agent added, “He's bigger than a typical Zarak, which is in his favour. He is only three and he will develop to be a very good four-year-old. He just ticks every box because he could be a Royal Ascot horse and a jumping horse. He was always going to be popular. He would have sold very well in Newmarket or Arqana, and he was a standout here. Physically, he will improve and his form is huge for stamina. We have never had a Zarak that couldn't jump. I expected him to make what he did. He will go into the mix now and we will find an owner.”Of the 94 horses offered, 77 were sold at a clearance rate of 82% [down by 3% on last year]. Turnover climbed a massive 63% while the €27,868 average was up by 69% and the median climbed 54% to €15,000.Three of the four six-figure lots were sold with National Hunt careers in mind; Peter Nolan and Noel Meade paid €110,000 for Ocean Ranger (Crystal Ocean), who came into the sale off the back of a second in a point-to-point, while Ronan Griffin went to €100,000 on Zelani (New Bay) from the Aga Khan draft. While Griffin revealed that plans were “a little up in the air” regarding a trainer, he confirmed that the 83-rated gelding was bought with a dual-purpose career in mind.Donohoe Unearths 'Potential Improver' From TwomeyOne horse who won't be going jumping is State Of Wyoming (Night Of Thunder), purchased by BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe for €105,000 on behalf of a Middle Eastern client. Trained by Paddy Twomey, State Of Wyoming won at the third attempt and came into the sale with a rating of 85. That Roscommon success came over the extended 7f and State Of Wyoming's unexposed profile was said to have been a big attraction for Donohoe. That, and the fact he feels he could improve one off the little-known Irish trainer! He explained, “Obviously, he's by one of the greatest stallions we're ever going to see in Night Of Thunder. He's a very good-looking horse – plenty of size and scope. He was obviously very well thought of given he went off favourite for his debut. He had a small bit of a setback but has shown very progressive form after that and, physically, he looks very well.”Donohoe added with a wink, “He's been bought from a trainer you can improve one out of, I think! We do think there is a lot more to come from this horse, in all seriousness. We definitely haven't seen the bottom of him yet.”“Progress” For Goffs As MEB Teams Claws Back €114,000 On Unpaid LotsGoffs managed to amass €114,000 of an unpaid bill on lots 113 right up to 117, all sold under the banner of MEB Equine and all down in the catalogue as being “sold to settle an account”. The five three-year-olds in question were purchased for €245,000 at Arkle Sale earlier in the summer meaning a large portion of the bill remains outstanding. Beeby commented, “The MEB team have found themselves in a difficult position and we have worked with them to try and resolve things. Part of working with them on this was to reoffer some of the horses.”When it was put to Beeby that horses being sold to publicly settle an account is not something we see very often, he replied, “Happily not. We've tried to work with them – we'll work with anybody if we can. Today's sales represent progress but it has reduced the bill, not cleared it. It is what it is.”Beeby Makes Plea For More Support To The H-I-T SectionThat proved to be one of only two snags on a day of strong selling for form horses at Goffs. The fact that the sales company could not attract more horses to that particular section of the sale remains something of an axe for Beeby to grind.“I'm going to sound like the proverbial broken record, but we said it last year, and the year before and the year before that and probably the year before that as well. Send us the horses and we will deliver,” Beeby said.“Just look at our top lot from the Aga Khan Studs draft which is a new record for the sale and, yet again, graphically illustrates that the Goffs Autumn HIT Sale can and will return the highest prices for the category. The €360,000 price tag for Almazann would have sat comfortably in the top echelons of Irish horses sold in England last week and we can say again that it continues to bemuse and frustrate us to see so many form horses travelling across the Irish Sea last week when we have such an international buying bench in Kildare Paddocks this week. As the only sale for the category in Ireland, we prove our point year after year, with so many connections delighted with the prices for the entries they entrust to us, and I keep highlighting the same issue. It's a simple fact that it costs less to travel to Kildare Paddocks than to Suffolk, while the entry fee and commission are lower at Goffs, so it just doesn't make sense not to sell Horses In Training here. All we can do is to keep saying it and keep making the case with hard facts in the hope that more Irish horses will support the sale and make proper use of the unique Goffs service.”He added, “The international nature of the buyers' profile and the opportunities they present is clearly demonstrated by the buyers list with horses heading to Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Saudi Arabia and the UK. Those buyers flock to Goffs each year following a concerted campaign from the Goffs Purchaser Attraction Team and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, ensuring a lively atmosphere in the ring as they interact with us and compete with each other. We appreciate their business and wish them well with their Goffs horses in training.“The new Point-To-Point section made a promising start with a top price of €110,000 and demonstrated that the concept works and has a future. It will be a fixture of this sale going forward. Today's small catalogue has delivered huge gains in each area to underline the strength of the sale with new records for average and median both of which compare favourably with the alternative.”The post Almazann Stars As €360,000 Willie Mullins Buy Powers Goffs To H-I-T Sale Record appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
