Residents of the Bronx neighbourhood in New York where 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong was shot dead are planning a vigil to honour him and demand action against rising youth violence. The gathering, scheduled for Thursday, November 5, is expected to draw attention to concerns over gun violence, knife-related attacks and other criminal activities involving young people in the community.Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, clarified that residents of the neighbourhood are organising the event and that it should not be mistaken for a traditional Ghanaian one-week funeral observance.“The neighbourhood in the Bronx is planning a vigil on Thursday. That’s the neighbourhood. That’s not a one-week funeral as we do in Ghana,” he said.He explained that residents had become concerned about violent incidents involving young people and intended to use the gathering to sustain pressure on authorities to address the situation, particularly through stronger measures on gun and knife-related crimes.“It’s a neighbourhood where people feel that there are too many of these violent behaviours by youngsters in that neighbourhood. And they thought it was about time that, you know, they express it, continuously express it to governments to do something about gun laws, knife laws, and some of these criminal behaviour,” he added.Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, November 2, Mr Smith said the vigil would serve both as a tribute to Javits and an opportunity for the community to make its concerns about youth violence heard.Javits was fatally shot by unidentified assailants at about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while reportedly on his way to school in the Bronx. Reports have also indicated that he had experienced bullying at school.
