Neursurgery resident caught and convicted to five years for secretly recording staff in bathroom (Bodycam footage)

Wait 5 sec.

I watch a lot of bodycam footages but this is so cringe. It certainly doesn't help with fostering the little trust patients already have with the healthcare system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQWZF2qwt40 https://www.peoriacounty.gov/m/newsflash/Home/Detail/1115 May 28, 2025, Peoria, IL – Today, Henry Chang, 30, a former neurosurgery resident in Peoria, was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for Unauthorized Videotaping. In August 2023, Chang installed a video camera in an employee bathroom at a local hospital where multiple employees were recorded using the bathroom. A female employee found the camera on the floor while using the bathroom after it had fallen from its hiding place. During today's sentencing hearing, several of Chang's victims were in attendance. A few of them tearfully addressed the court, while over a dozen letters were submitted detailing the impact of Chang’s actions. Each victim shared that Chang violated their privacy and trust and caused irreparable harm. Their workplace, once their “safe space,” now feels unsafe. They experience stress and anxiety every time they use a public restroom and constantly check for hidden cameras. Because of Chang, something as simple as using a restroom is no longer safe or private for these individuals. Their lives have forever been altered. Ultimately, Chang took an oath to become a doctor, pledging to do no harm. One victim stated, “Harm was done in ways that words cannot describe.” In arguing for the maximum sentence allowed by law, which is six years, Assistant State’s Attorney Dave Gast quoted a letter from one of the victims: “Character is defined by what you do when no one is looking.” Chang revealed his true character when he videotaped over 50 individuals during their most vulnerable moments. Gast then turned to the victims in the courtroom and stated, “These people deserve justice.” When issuing the sentence, Chief Judge Katherine Gorman described Chang’s actions as reprehensible, noting, “You did it 56 times,” and stated there was no getting around that. However, taking into account Chang’s efforts to improve himself, such as attending therapy and recovery meetings, she decided to sentence him to 2.5 years for each count and also ruled him eligible for impact incarceration. Chang’s sentences will be served one right after the other, resulting in a total of five years in prison. submitted by /u/princetonwu [link] [comments]
