Malta’s record-breaking endurance swimmer Neil Agius is preparing for another 12-hour challenge, but this time, he wants hundreds of people to join him in the water. On Boxing Day, 26th December, Neil will swim continuously for 12 hours at the Neptunes pool, raising money for L-Istrina and the Malta Community Chest Fund. The event, called Ngħumu Flimkien Għal L-Istrina, invites swimmers of all ages and abilities to take part, with participants joining Neil for swimming slots throughout the day in exchange for a donation. And unlike his previous record-breaking swims, this challenge isn’t about how far anyone can swim. It’s about bringing people together for a good cause.“Becoming a father this year has made me think more about the community I want my child to grow up in, one where we look out for each other and help when we can,” Neil said.He added that people don’t even need to get into the pool to make a difference.“Whether you swim a few lengths, cheer someone on from the sidelines or simply come down to make a donation, everyone has a part to play.”In 2024, Neil completed a 142.3km swim around the Maltese islands in 60 hours and 35 minutes, setting his second world record. He followed that up in September 2025 by swimming around Gozo seven days in a row. This time, however, the focus is on community rather than records. The event will also feature in L-Istrina’s television coverage, with swimming clubs, companies, families and members of the public encouraged to get involved. Those interested in taking part or making a donation can register and contribute through Neil Agius’s official website.Would you join Neil for a few lengths this Boxing Day?Photo credits: Andrew Mercieca•
