I messed up and I'm having a crisis of confidence

Please be nice. I'm struggling here, and looking for constructive advice. I've lost trust in myself and don't feel my colleagues should trust me either. A bit of background... I've been out of the hospital system for 3 years and I'm a bit rusty. In the time I was out of the hospital I got diagnosed with ADHD. I haven't had any complex patients in a while and I do struggle with detail and task management. I've been working temporarily on a ward and have been discussing a more permanent position in this ward but now I want to go to the manager and say "don't hire me, I'm not good enough" but I'm scared to approach senior staff in case they go "yes you're absolutely useless, please go away". I was assigned a patient on a night shift who was complex for the ward (mild DKA) and I just ... I don't know what I did really. I didn't manage the patient well, I juggled some aspects ok but I didn't monitor appropriately as per protocol. The patient had been treated for mild DKA during the day but the protocol had been ceased 5 hours before I started and I think i just wasn't considering whether he was tipping back into the parameters again. The patient was GCS 15 but had really poor insight and was very non compliant, constantly taking off nasal prongs, drinking water in the bathroom, wouldn't pee in a bottle... I found them very difficult to manage in every way The patent wasn't flagged for ICU and didn't deteriorate thankfully but he didn't improve either. I was not in control of it, I didn't formulate a proper plan for my shift or seek out the advice of the charge nurse. I don't feel I can trust myself now and I'm terrified I've lost the trust of the people I was working with. I'm crashing out. I want to run away and work in a supermarket where I don't have this level of responsibility where I can actually hurt someone. Thanks for listening, any constructive advice welcome. submitted by /u/No_Sky_1829 [link] [comments]
