An infrastructure project that may have caused a traffic headache on your most recent visit to Magic Kingdom Park may take another three years to wrap up. The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) has requested additional time to finish the World Drive North Phase 3 development, an expansion of a roadway at Walt Disney World Resort.Three More Years of Construction on Walt Disney World’s World Drive?Credit: Steven Miller, FlickrThe current permit for the end of the road-widening project in the Magic Kingdom Resort Area expires on December 2, 2026. However, the CFTOD has just requested a three-year extension for the construction on World Drive, near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, and Magic Kingdom Park.TLP Engineering Consultants wrote the request letter to the South Florida Water Management District on behalf of CFTOD. The company says they’ve made significant progress on the World Drive expansion. Still, the current deadline doesn’t allow enough time to complete it with a “minor modification”: leaving 0.16 acres of pavement on Floridian Way that was originally slated for removal.Credit: Frank Phillips, FlickrEngineers say they’ve completed most utility work in the construction corridor, which they consider a “significant milestone.” Crews are currently working on the final roundabout and road surface, with landscaping and area development work slated to start in late 2027.If approved, the permit for World Drive North Phase 3 would expire on December 2, 2029.What Will Change (In Three Years)Credit: Theme Park Tourist, FlickrThis project will widen World Drive from just south of Seven Seas Drive north to Maple Road. The route runs alongside the parking lot for Magic Kingdom Park, past Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. A roundabout is in development near the Grand Floridian. When complete, the project corridor will connect with other infrastructure developments at Walt Disney World Resort, including the World Drive Phase 2 project to the south and the Floridian Way project to the north. It will allow for more traffic to flow efficiently around the Central Florida Disney parks, especially when the Piston Peak National Park and Disney Villains expansions open at the Magic Kingdom. Will the World Drive road expansion improve your Central Florida Disney Parks vacation?
