After months of being named a potential frontrunner in the race to become the new James Bond in Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming film reboot, Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden has finally broken his silence to address the rumors.Lowden’s name has been floated by fans and the media for a few years, but recent months have seen speculation over who will succeed Daniel Craig as 007 intensify.Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsRelated: New ‘James Bond’ Sequels Likely, Amazon Says, Existing 007 Actor Expected To ReturnSeveral actors, including Jacob Elordi (Wuthering Heights), Callum Turner (Eternity), Jack O’Connell (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple), and Jack Barton (Heartstopper), have also been linked to the role. More recently, however, reports have named Lowden, Turner, and Josh O’Connor (Disclosure Day) among actors involved in the latest screen-test process in London. While Amazon MGM has not officially commented on any of these rumors, the studio announced earlier this year that casting director Nina Gold would be leading the search for the next 007.“The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”Interestingly, Nina Gold is also the casting director for Slow Horses, which stars Lowden. But that’s not the only potential clue that he may indeed be the next actor to suit up in the iconic tux.Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsLowden, who’s best known for playing the James Bond-esque MI5 agent River Cartwright in Apple TV+’s popular spy thriller series opposite Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), has continued to surface online, with many fans convinced that he may have already landed the role.Earlier this year, English presenter and novelist Richard Osman claimed that he had been told “for definite” who the new Bond is. “The name I’ve heard is Jack Lowden,” Osman said on his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast (via Metro). Although he went on to say, “It is definitively not a ‘he’s definitely got it’ thing. He is definitely being strongly considered. I think he’d be amazing.”Following Osman’s comments, Lowden was named among a reported group of contenders shared by Page Six.Credit: Inside the MagicSubsequently, Lowden’s wife, actress Saoirse Ronan (See How They Run) told Empire in August that she wants to play a Bond villain, which prompted further speculation about whether the couple might know more about the casting process than they were letting on.At the same time, Ronan has also played down the speculation, telling Associated Press in October that she and her husband are “kind of getting on with our life” and that “it’s not really a subject that’s coming up in our house.”In September, however, Gary Oldman threw fuel to the fire during an appearance on Canada’s The Morning Show (via The Hollywood Reporter), saying, “It’s been rumored that [Lowden] is on the shortlist,” adding, “We’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we? Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.”Oldman later clarified his comments, explaining that he did not know who had been chosen and had simply heard a rumor the producers had made their decision, while reiterating that he hoped Lowden would get the role.Credit: MGM/EON ProductionsNow, the Calibre actor has finally addressed those rumors in a new interview with GQ.“It’s all very flattering,” Lowden admitted. “It’s nice to be mentioned — for any role — and I’m just not really going to add to the noise.”When asked about Gary Oldman’s comments, he said, “It’s very nice, and Gary’s a sweetheart. It’s particularly lovely, coming from someone like him. But I don’t really listen to it.”What Do We Know About the New James Bond Film?So far, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that Denis Villeneuve (Dune) will direct the next James Bond film, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) writing the screenplay and Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and David Heyman (Harry Potter) producing.Although we’re none the wiser about who will inherit the 007 designation from Daniel Craig, it’s possible an announcement will happen soon, as Pascal told Deadline in August that we may learn who the new James Bond is by the end of this year.“I would say the end of the year is a good bet. We are being really, really methodical,” she said, adding that the new iteration of Bond has “got to be something really different that is stirring and exciting and different.”Could Jack Lowden really be the next James Bond?
