James Comer warns Rep. Mary Peltola may not be seated if she wins the Alaska Senate race. He points to the ‘Decoy Dan’ scandal

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer said Sunday that Rep. Mary Peltola faces a “big possibility” of not being seated if she wins Alaska’s Senate contest. He tied the concern to the “Decoy Dan” situation, in which a second candidate with a similar name appeared on the ballot. On the same day, according to Mediaite, a federal judge decided that the Trump administration cannot stop Alaska officials from certifying the results if Peltola defeats incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. Administration lawyers had claimed that voters might mix up the two candidates, both named Dan Sullivan, one of them unaffiliated with any party. The New York Times reported last week that Alaska’s Democratic Party spent months locating Daniel J. Sullivan and placed him on the ballot. The report said the party took the step to confuse voters. The move is not illegal, yet people on both sides have described it as a dirty trick. Hearings set for Thursday and Friday on how the second candidate was added Comer spoke during an interview on Fox News with host Larry Kudlow. When Kudlow asked whether Peltola could be kept from taking office if she wins, Comer answered, “That’s a big possibility.” He added: “I have not spoken to Sen. [John] Thune about that. We kind of tend to operate within the confinements of the House with respect to our investigations. But at the end of the day, I think the American people can see loud and clear what was done here. The fact that The New York Times broke the story – and good for The New York Times, I don’t say that very often – but good for them on a quality investigative piece here.” He went on to say, “No one in America should stand for this. We cannot allow this to happen. The fact that there are a lot of people involved in the Democrat National Party who have been silent on this, and the question remains, who all was involved, when did this involvement begin? Did money change hands – that’s a big question.” Comer also confirmed that his committee will hold hearings on the matter this week. Alaska election officials had previously ruled Sullivan can’t run against Sullivan. Kudlow described the targets and timing, saying, “You are going after, let’s see, the Rios woman, the former campaign manager when got fired, linked to The New York Times, and others. And yours are going to be November 5th and 6th. So that’s, what, Thursday and Friday? Jamie, tell me about it. First of all, will they come? Have they agreed to testify before your committee?” Comer replied, “They have not agreed yet. But, hopefully, they will. And at the end of the day, I think they’re probably going to wait and hope that the election… turns out in their favor, and they’re going the deny and try to delay and do whatever.” He added, “But at the end of the day, there’s more than enough evidence, in my opinion, to conduct an investigation that clearly shows that there was a conspiracy to deny the people of Alaska a fair election.” The judge’s ruling clears the way for Alaska to certify a Peltola win if one occurs, while Comer has said the hearings will look into how Daniel J. Sullivan reached the ballot and which people took part. Trump’s DOJ had also sued to block the election results if Sullivan loses. The interview aired on the program Sunday Morning Futures.
