Ange Postecoglou’s former assistant coach at Tottenham, Nick Montgomery, has shared the bold statement the manager made to him to attract him to North London.Montgomery had already worked as a manager in the A-League and in Scotland, but he chose to join Postecoglou’s coaching staff as an assistant at Spurs in 2023.The 45-year-old subsequently also followed Postecoglou to Nottingham Forest, and he has since returned to being a manager. He is currently having tremendous success as the man in charge at Beijing Guoan. The Chinese club are unbeaten in 21 games across all competitions at the moment, and have already won the Chinese FA Super Cup. Despite being given a five-point deduction for historical breaches, Guoan are still not out of the title race this season.Photo by Justin Setterfield/Getty ImagesNick Montgomery reveals Ange Postecoglou was always confident he would break Tottenham’s trophy droughtEven though Spurs finished 17th in the league in Postecoglou’s final season at the club, he will always be remembered fondly by Tottenham fans for breaking the club’s trophy drought, which had been ongoing since 2008.The Lilywhites beat Man United in the final at the San Mamés in Bilbao to lift the Europa League trophy in May 2025, and Montgomery has shared that the 61-year-old was confident of winning silverware as soon as he took the job.The Beijing Guoan boss told GiveMeSport: “It’s not like I would be an assistant for any manager. I did get asked about being an assistant to another manager, but it wasn’t for me. I knew I was waiting for the right opportunity to get back into management.“As with anything in life, it’s about timing. Ange contacted me, we jumped on a call, and he said, ‘I’m going to win a trophy at Tottenham. I want you to come and help me.’ To be honest, I didn’t really need to think about it much. It was a pretty quick decision, and one I definitely don’t regret. Seeing the Tottenham fans at the parade with the trophy was something you can never forget.“There was an unbelievable amount of injuries, and the squad was very, very thin. We had some big results, beating Man City 4-0 away and Man United 3-0, but after the injuries came, it was difficult. Winning the Europa League would get the club Champions League football, so you put all your eggs in one basket. As a staff, that’s what we all did. We believed we could win it, and that’s what we did.“I think only now, or years after, will people look back and think what an amazing achievement that was, because it’s been a difficult ride since then – when you look at the amount of money they’ve spent.”RankCoachPoints/mPointsMWDLGGC1Tim Sherwood1.914222133640302Mauricio Pochettino1.8938220211343463722063Antonio Conte1.881055632915112644Andre Villas-Boas1.83995429121381675Harry Redknapp1.742501447137362281616Jose Mourinho1.64955827141797677Ryan Mason1.58191261526208Martin Jol1.511711134730361681469Nuno Espirito Santo1.50151050591610Ray Clemence1.405942161115606611Gerry Francis1.3916511943364015014212Ange Postecoglou1.371047631113413812613George Graham1.311289833293612912314David Pleat1.29493814717515515Glenn Hoddle1.281148932183911614116Christian Gross1.2634279711354117Jacques Santini1.1813113446818Osvaldo Ardiles1.156254161424758319Juande Ramos1.144136101115545220Thomas Frank1.1229267811363722Cristian Stellini1.004411261123Igor Tudor0.2015014413Montgomery reveals coaching staff knew Spurs sack was coming before Europa League finalPostecoglou and his staff had been under a lot of pressure the whole season, but former Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided against making a change mid-season.Montgomery has now admitted that the entire staff knew that they were going to leave, even if they won the Europa League, although he admitted that they wished they had a chance to build on that victory. The 45-year-old added: “Ange came out and said it in an interview, so for sure – everyone knew there was going to be a change no matter what happened. So you have that laser focus on what you can control, and that was winning the Europa League. It was amazing for the club to get Champions League football the following season – it’s just a shame they didn’t give Ange and us that chance. But that’s football. You move on.”READ MORE: Tottenham icon Toby Alderweireld reveals two career moments will haunt him foreverThe post ‘I’m going to win a trophy at Tottenham’ – How Ange Postecoglou convinced Montgomery to join Spurs project appeared first on Spurs Web.
