Roberto De Zerbi’s decision to take the Tottenham players to Marbella a few weeks ago has had a transformative effect on the squad, according to one of the club’s youngsters.De Zerbi is no stranger to arranging mid-season getaways at his previous clubs, and the trips away have often been followed by an improvement in the team’s results. The Italian decided to do the same last month after Spurs found themselves winless and at the bottom of the table six games into the new campaign. The Tottenham boss was criticised for taking the squad to Marbella, especially so soon after a long international break, but the results since then speak for themselves.Spurs have won three games on the bounce since returning from Spain and have shot up to ninth place in the Premier League table, currently sitting just three points off the Champions League places. That’s the thing the gaffer speaks about all the time and that’s what we’ve been trying to do. The last few games, we’ve been doing that. When asked about the confidence currently in the group at the moment, the youngster responded: “Yeah, definitely. Like I said, we’re just more of a team. We’re all like brothers. We all get on really well and you can see that out there on the pitch, even with the celebrations, all the subs running over to the players and everything like that. It’s those little things that mean so much to us as players and I think that’s the most important thing.”Mateus Fernandes revealed something similar about the trip to Marbella last week. He said: “Marbella was very important for us as a team. I think it builds a very good relationship with everyone, with the staff, with the team, with the teammates. Now we’re playing as a team. I think this is the change point for everybody. Now we keep going and we believe more than ever in our squad.”Gray admits Spurs are now a team rather than a set of individualsEarlier in the season when the Lilywhites were struggling, De Zerbi suggested that Tottenham had not gelled as a team after the wholesale changes made to the squad in the summer.Grey believes that has changed over the last few weeks, with the Spurs squad becoming a tighter unit and fighting for each other on the pitch. When asked how much the players are enjoying their current run, the former Leeds man said: “It’s a really important time for us. I think we’ve improved so much over the last couple of weeks. I think we’re more of a team, more together. We’re just performing better because we work for each other on the pitch.”A.
