Vice President JD Vance responded to a young voter’s question about housing affordability by segueing to a comment about Ohio Senator Jon Husted. The exchange unfolded during a Fox News town hall at Texas Christian University, where student Kate White, vice president of the school’s Turning Point USA chapter, asked Vance how young Americans could afford to start their lives amid soaring housing costs. “A constant message that my generation hears from the right is to get married young, have kids young, have as many kids as possible. And I think what the right doesn’t acknowledge most of the time is how disincentivized we are currently because of the cost of owning a home and the general expenses of raising a family,” White said. “How does the right and yourself expect us to start families young when you know the average price of a home in America now costs more than $415,000, which just feels out of reach for us?” Vance appeared to ignore the question and replied. “I want to point out that I think I’ve been asked four or maybe five questions, and by my count, I’ve only been asked one question about Jon Husted’s ass – and it was by Jesse Watters,” Vance said, referencing the Fox News host who moderated the town hall. Vance also gets behind over Husted’s rear Watters laughed at Vance’s response, remarking that it was what people were talking about. “Maybe you should run for Senate on the Democratic side here in Texas, Jesse,” Vance joked. Afterward, the Vice President acknowledged that Republicans had not done enough to address the financial pressures facing younger Americans. “Most Republicans don’t… I think that I’m an exception,” he said. “But I think that our entire party, our entire movement, and certainly I think the President of the United States, is very focused on, how do we make it possible for young people to afford the basic components of an American dream.” Q: How do you expect us to start families young when the average price of a home feels out of reach?JD VANCE: I want to point out that I've only gotten one question about Jon Husted's ass pic.twitter.com/mFgYuuRQIN— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) October 30, 2026 Vance then finally answered White’s question. “My personal advice, as one person who’s been in similar shoes, is that it’s never the right time—so go ahead and do it, because you’re never going to regret getting married and having kids,” he told the student. Watters agreed with Vance’s advice, adding his own perspective: “And sometimes, when you’re in love, you just get pregnant and figure it out. That’s not a great political answer, but it usually works well.” Vance’s off-topic quip about Husted’s physique comes amid a series of remarks by President Donald Trump about Husted’s appearance while campaigning for the Ohio senator, who is seeking election to a full Senate term on November 3. “His ass… It’s like a pile of muscle,” Trump said. “Then I looked at his legs, and I said, ‘Man, his feet are big.’ Then I looked at his shoulders, and I tapped him on the shoulder, and it actually hurt my hand. He’s like a piece of steel. I said, ‘This guy’s a monster.’” Vance is now facing backlash over his offhand comments about Husted. Krystal Ball, a political commentator and podcast host, called it a “tone-deaf moment,” while former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly described the remark as “disgusting, but not surprising.” The official X account for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Press Office reacted to the clip with three question marks, while former Trump White House Press Secretary Sarah Matthews commented, “I genuinely cannot believe this is a real exchange between a voter and the Vice President of the United States.”
