The Arsenal Way: Henry’s Beautiful Gesture That Meant More Than Any Trophy

Wait 5 sec.

You may have heard Thierry Henry this week had to defend a few lighthearted comments he made while hosting the Ballon d’Or.From a PR point of view, it’s proved a blessing in disguise, though, for the Frenchman. How the algorithm works on social media is that if your name starts trending, other similar videos will appear about the subject. The Nordoff and Robbins charity also wanted to take a few weeks to edit montages from their Legends of Football ceremony at the start of October. So even though it was a month ago, only now is the 49-year-old’s incredible gesture being heavily reported. The Arsenal legend was in London to be honoured for his contribution to football.Yet he took a day that could have been all about himself and made it about someone else.A Gesture That Meant More Than Any TrophyThe Invincible had met a young child hours before the event at a music therapy centre and watched how the boy communicated through music and letter boards.Later that night, the audience listened to the child’s parents give a speech about their son’s daily routine. At the end of the night, when it was time for the former striker to collect his award, instead of reflecting on his career, he spontaneously called the couple back on stage, said he didn’t deserve the trophy, and wanted them to take it home with them and hand it over to the young Gooner. The Gunner has a collection of medals and accolades. Even in retirement, he will be invited to gala events around the world that want to celebrate his body of work.So he can afford to get in his car and go back to his hotel empty-handed, but what makes the gesture so classy is what it will mean to a family.Imagine being an Arsenal fan and your mum and dad walk in with a gift for you from Thierry Henry! The event had already raised over £240,000, and this will only raise awareness of the brilliant work the organisation does.Because only 1,000 guests were at the fundraising dinner, and wanting to respect a vulnerable child’s privacy, the few journalists in attendance wanted to wait for the charity itself to edit footage.Unfortunately, in society, negative stories get more traction than positive ones, so how Lamine Yamal or Harry Kane feel about a joke will make more headlines than a man doing something kind-hearted.That’s why it’s important for me to highlight what our former captain did.Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger (Getty Images)The Arsenal WayIt’s fitting it happened in the English capital because that’s where he made so many memories. It’s the city where he walked into a dressing room and was taught about the values of a certain club; he was educated about the crest on the famous red and white shirt; and he had it explained that at Highbury there were non-negotiable principles. Then, when he matured, it was his turn to ensure his peers carried on that ethos. On the red half of North London, things were always done with class… the right way… the Arsenal way.Celebrating one of the greatest to ever play this game, it’s fitting that he responded with class. He could have talked about the unbeaten season, reflected on winning the World Cup, or told an audience what it’s like to lift the Champions League.Yet the measure of a person isn’t actually how successful or how rich they were. It’s how many people’s lives you changed.Henry met a few strangers, and instead of taking the applause for himself, he made memories a family will cherish forever.Dan SmithDoes Thierry Henry’s gesture remind us what it truly means to represent Arsenal and the values of the club?
