A woman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being caught driving with an expired licence and stolen number plates in St Paul’s Bay.According to TVM News, Carmela Cini was stopped by police during a roadblock in Triq Dawret il-Gżejjer at around 12.30am on 30th January 2021.Officers discovered that her driving licence had expired and that the vehicle’s registration number did not match the plates attached to it.Cini reportedly admitted to police that she had taken the number plates from a parked car in Qawra. She was subsequently charged with driving without a valid licence, stealing registration plates and breaching previous court sentences. Before handing down the sentence, Magistrate Victor Axiak stressed that her actions had put other road users at risk.He explained that if Cini had been involved in an accident, the stolen plates could have made it difficult for victims to identify the vehicle and seek compensation. The court also noted that Cini only admitted to the offences five years after they occurred.Alongside the 18-month prison sentence, she was disqualified from driving for three years. The magistrate also ordered the activation of a previously suspended two-month prison sentence linked to another case. The prosecution was led by Inspector Rachel Aquilina.•
