New York woman says a colleague snitched after she told a coworker she’d leave for a better-paying job, and she eventually got fired

Wait 5 sec.

A woman from New York City says a lighthearted comment about a higher-paying job led to a workplace reprimand, repeated reports to HR, and eventually her firing. McKenna Moore, who posts on TikTok as @hahamckenna, shared the account in a video that has gained hundreds of thousands of views. On-screen text in the clip read, “Got in trouble at work for saying I’d rather make $200k than my salary of $90k”. The caption she posted with the video stated, “yeah that’s totally my bad for wanting to double my salary WHOOPS”. McKenna Moore said in the video that a male coworker was leaving for a job at Chase Bank as an editorial fellow, and that nobody had told her about his departure. She explained that the role pays extremely well in financial journalism, which was the field they worked in. She described telling him to have fun and adding that if he ever needed to hire somebody for $200,000 a year, he should let her know. She said one of her other colleagues tattled on her and acted as though she was begging for a job as the man left. McKenna Moore stated that her boss then called her into a conference room and told her the comment was actually really disrespectful. Colleague reported the comment and boss called it disrespectful According to her account, the boss said that as an editor, she really needed to make sure she was acting like she wanted to be there. McKenna Moore said in the video that her boss makes less than $200,000 and asked whether the boss would not leave for that salary. She stated, “Like, am I wildin’ for that, really?” She described the situation as one in which she was not wrong and referred to the boss as a b–ch. She said she ultimately sent some very unkind emails to her boss and reported her to HR a lot. McKenna Moore stated that she did get fired, so she kind of lost that battle. She added with a smile, “But oh boy, did I fight.” Her story is not the only viral firing, as another woman received a drunk text from her boss saying she’d lost her job. Viewers reacted to the account of workplace reporting and the later firing. One commenter wrote, “Someone pls do a psych study on why corporate tattling is a thing”. Another asked, “How long ago has this been? Because if you did go to HR about her than it could be retaliation of why they fired you.” A different viewer stated, “as the HR person, you’re secretly my favorite type of employee”. One commenter expressed surprise at the reporting and wrote, “I’m still stuck on the part where someone who you worked with tattletaled on you like we’re in kindergarten.” Another noted, “They’ll fire you for anything these days like”. Workplace firings can get stranger still, like a former boss asking a fired worker for help after showing her the door.
