Tottenham Hotspur suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat on Sunday as Newcastle United ran out 2-0 winners in North London, although there were clear improvements alongside some familiar concerns for Roberto De Zerbi to address.Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Tottenham 0-2:Tottenham Hotspur still cannot score in the Premier LeagueThere was plenty of criticism of Tottenham’s attacking threat after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford, although the opposite was true in midweek when Spurs put five past Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup.They created considerably more and better opportunities against Newcastle than they did at Brentford, but once again could not find the breakthrough and remain without a Premier League goal this season.Savio missed out with ‘muscle fatigue’ after scoring and assisting as a late substitute against Charlton, leaving De Zerbi to use Pedro Porro on the right wing. The makeshift winger never really looked like scoring, while Mathys Tel had another frustrating afternoon on the opposite flank. The 21-year-old failed to create a single chance and did not complete a single dribble, despite attempting 2, while he was also guilty of giving the ball away cheaply on several occasions.Better decision-making in the final third remains the obvious solution, and hopefully Savio’s return next weekend can help address that.Photo by Shaun Brooks – CameraSport via Getty ImagesOmar Marmoush and Mateus Fernandes provide the positivesHaving only been announced as a Tottenham player on Thursday, Omar Marmoush was immediately thrown into the starting XI and was arguably the only attacking player to come away from the defeat with much credit. The Egyptian created 3 chances, the joint-most in the game, while also registering three attempts, including one on target. His link-up play and passing were impressive too, offering plenty of encouragement that the goals will soon follow. The other major positive was Mateus Fernandes, who also created 3 chances and completed 53 of his 54 passes for an outstanding 98 per cent accuracy. The Portuguese midfielder also created Tottenham’s only big chance of the afternoon and looked perfectly suited to De Zerbi’s system, particularly with his line-breaking passes and ability to pick out teammates from distance.Mohammed Kudus finally makes his Tottenham returnThe Ghanaian International finally returned to competitive action after being sidelined since early January with a hamstring injury.De Zerbi had suggested on Friday that Kudus could ‘maybe’ make the bench, so it was a welcome surprise to see him introduced during the game.Kudus understandably lacked some sharpness after such a lengthy absence, but Tottenham immediately looked more threatening with him operating from the right than they had with Porro in the same position. It will take time for the former West Ham man to reach his best, but once he does, he could become a major solution to Tottenham’s attacking problems, especially with De Zerbi already hinting that he could also operate in the number 10 role.Fitness concerns remain a problem for Tottenham HotspurTottenham are still without a natural number 10, and that lack of creativity is continuing to have an impact on their attacking play. James Maddison picked up a shoulder injury against Brentford and is expected to miss around two weeks, while Xavi Simons remains out with a long-term ACL injury.Dejan Kulusevski has also been out for more than a year and only returned to full training a few days ago, meaning there is still no clear timeframe for his competitive comeback.Savio’s absence added another problem on Sunday, although De Zerbi confirmed that the Brazilian should be available to face Nottingham Forest next weekend.Until Maddison returns, it would therefore not be a surprise to see either Savio or Kudus used centrally, with the other taking up his usual position on the right.Sandro Tonali struggles against his former clubSandro Tonali was expected to have a big say against his former club, but his evening ended with the Newcastle supporters mocking him as he was substituted with 15 minutes remaining and Spurs two goals behind. It was another disappointing outing for Tottenham’s record signing, who frequently gave the ball away and did not look as physical as he is capable of being in midfield. Tonali won just two duels throughout the game and managed only four defensive contributions. If Tottenham are going to start turning these performances into victories, they need considerably more physicality in midfield, and Tonali has to be one of the players leading that improvement.READ MORE: Tottenham 0-2 Newcastle Match Report: Sandro Tonali struggles against his old sideThe post Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle, including two silver linings appeared first on Spurs Web.
