Netflix dropped a new true crime documentary just ahead of the holiday weekend. Death of the Pastor’s Wife tells the true story of Mica Miller, whose body was found in a North Carolina state park in April 2024, and whose death was ruled a suicide. But after national attention and a campaign from her friends and family, evidence emerged to suggest Mica had told police she was “afraid for her life” a month before her death, having reported an alleged stalking plot against her by her husband.Mica had suggested her ex-husband John-Paul Miller, the pastor of her family’s church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was harassing her and putting her life in danger. JP, is now.NetflixWhat happened between Mica Miller and John-Paul Miller?Mica Francis and her family became regulars at Solid Rock Church, an evangelical parish, when they moved to Myrtle Beach when she was a teenager. At the time, Pastor John-Paul was married with five children, and Mica began working as his assistant.At 18, Mica got married to her first husband, whose family was also regulars at the church, and the ceremony was officiated by JP. The pair then began an affair in 2015, when she was aged 20. Eventually, they both divorced their partners and got married to each other in 2017, when he was 38 years old.According to Mica’s family and friends, who are featured in the documentary, JP’s behavior was extremely worrying from the beginning. He was allegedly “possessive” and “used the Bible” over her, refused to let her sleep unless they had sex, and engaged in multiple affairs.As executive producer Alana Goldstein put it to Tudum, “The broad thing that JP was doing was trying to strip away her freedom, her independence, her self-esteem. Not through one single event, but through years and years of continuous micro-events that trapped her in a state of dependence on him.”Eventually, Mica attempted to leave her marriage when she began to feel harassed by JP. As the documentary covers, he allegedly slashed her tires, posted a nude photo of her on social media, planted tracking devices on her car, and left countless voice messages and texts on her phone.She later accused him of sexual, coercive, and emotional abuse, making several calls to police, with one report claiming she said she felt “groomed” by him, reaching out more than 10 times for help. In April 2024, she filed for divorce alongside a handwritten affidavit, which detailed: “Since the day we became husband and wife, I have been abused in every way I can think of—emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically.”Two days later, she left her accommodation for her lunchtime shift at a café and was later found dead in Lumber River State Park. Robeson County medical examiner Dr. Richard Johnson told WPDE that the shot was “self-inflicted” and ruled that she died by suicide.Mica’s friends and family then started an online petition that alleged Mica “lost her life due to no one helping her from being harassed and excessively stalked, among other things by her soon-to-be ex-husband she was desperately trying to get away from.” They continued to question whether the abuse and stalking she experienced contributed to her death, adding that she “was ready to finally live a free life away from her soon-to-be ex-husband.”JP’s attorney Russell B. Long rejected all allegations and shared a statement in May 2024 which read, “Following the untimely death of Mica Miller, unfounded rumours and false accusations began circulating on social media and in various media outlets, suggesting Pastor Miller’s involvement in her demise. This created a buzz, causing local and national media outlets to be proliferating these falsehoods, on a mammoth proportion. Our client refutes any report that suggests he ever abused his wife.”In the documentary, Mica is seen purchasing a gun at a pawn shop before driving herself to the park. She makes a call to police indicating she was going to take her own life, telling the dispatcher: “I’m about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me.”In December 2025, the U.S. Attorney’s Office indicted JP on two counts. The first was a cyberstalking charge in regard to an alleged pattern of harassment from November 2022 until Mica’s death, including calling her up to 50 times in a day. The second was for making a false statement, alleging he lied to federal investigators about deflating her tires.JP pleaded not guilty and has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. He is currently awaiting trial, which is currently scheduled for October 2026.NetflixWhere is JP Miller now?JP’s federal trial has been postponed a number of times since the indictment—most recently from August to October—which the documentary’s director Michael Gasparro puts down to the defense going through the discovery documents: “It was supposed to happen back in the spring. It got pushed in June, to August, and now it’s October.”He currently remains out on bond and, since Mica’s death, has remarried. In June 2025, he wed Suzie Skinner, a member of the Solid Rock Church.
