Cavan Sullivan is picking up steam ahead of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s first camp post-FIFA World Cup.Sullivan scored the Union’s second goal on Saturday night in an eventual 3-1 MLS victory over rivals New York Red Bulls. The 16-year-old attacker made it back-to-back goalscoring appearances, becoming the first league player in his age group with goal contributions in four-consecutive matches.Milan Iloski propelled Ryan Richter’s squad in front after 21 minutes before Sullivan doubled the Union’s advantage five minutes after the interval. He has contributed three goals and seven assists in 20 MLS appearances this season, in addition to three goals and four assists in six combined Leagues Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup outings. “The goal that he scored, it is what he is capable of doing,” Union interim head coach Ryan Richter said postmatch about Sullivan. “It is in these one-versus-one situations that he is different. And we want to give him the freedom to express himself.”Linked with a move to English Premier League side Manchester City when he turns 18, Sullivan could very well be on his way to a first-ever USMNT call-up in September. His impactful second full season with the Union’s first team has led to plenty of fan excitement as the USMNT gets set to kick off their 2030 cycle.The Union have also benefitted from Sullivan’s impact on the field, remaining unbeaten in MLS play since Richter took over as interim head coach. Richter has won five of his seven MLS matches (five wins, two draws) in charge of the Union since replacing the fired Bradley Carnell in late-May, leading the Union up the Eastern Conference standings. The Union will have four MLS matches on their schedule before the USMNT begins a four-match friendly schedule on September 26. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad will host Peru, Chile, Mexico, and Canada during a two-week period between Sept. 26-October 6 and with his role rising in Philadelphia, it’s hard to not see Sullivan named in that roster. While a senior USMNT call-up remains a goal of Sullivan’s, he is staying focused on his current job with the Union first. “I am not really focused on the whole call-up thing. But I am happy that we are winning games and that I am making a difference,” Sullivan said. “The goals and assists are coming. I am just trying to keep this momentum.”
