Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that an existing fund used by school heads to support vulnerable students will triple from €10,000 to €30,000 a year from the next scholastic year. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Abela announced the measure during a visit to SkolaSajf in Żejtun, with footage shared on his social media showing him meeting staff and children and watching students take part in different activities.The additional €20,000 is intended to give school heads greater flexibility to help children and families who cannot afford basic educational necessities.The money can be used for school uniforms and clothing, lunches, educational outings and activities, books and other learning materials. In certain circumstances, the fund can also cover specialised services needed for a student’s development, wellbeing or inclusion.Students who could benefit are identified by their school together with the college’s psychosocial team, with the process carried out confidentially and according to the needs of each child and their family.Abela said the measure, which formed part of Labour’s electoral manifesto, is intended to ensure that no student is held back because of their circumstances.During the visit, Abela, who was accompanied by Education and Sports Minister Byron Camilleri, also toured one of the school’s calming spaces, designed to give students somewhere to regulate their emotions, reduce stress or refocus before returning to class.This year’s SkolaSajf is being attended by 12,634 children across 54 centres in Malta and Gozo, with 2,761 educators involved and a total investment of €7.4 million.What do you make of the €30,000 fund?•
