Swamp Run in Upshur County, West Virginia, faced decades of water quality problems caused by acid mine drainage from buried coal refuse left by abandoned surface coal mines. The Buckhannon River Watershed Association and West Virginia Water Research Institute developed and completed two treatment projects, in 2016 and 2020, to address polluted water entering the stream. The systems use limestone-based treatment and other components to reduce acidity, aluminum, and iron.
