Big gains by a small man - ABUS: Waiting for the 2 ATR BreakoutArbutus Biopharma CorporationBATS:ABUSAsgeirSABUS: Waiting for the 2 ATR Breakout at $5.31 Arbutus Biopharma (ABUS) currently represents the breakout side of my ATR-based trading strategy. Why ABUS is on my radar My starting point is not technical analysis alone. I first look for financially solid companies identified through the principles of Joel Greenblatt's Magic Formula, which combines strong returns on capital with attractive valuation. From this financially selected universe, I then look for specific three-year price patterns that can provide a technical entry. For my Breakout 2 ATR strategy, I focus on stocks that have at least doubled within the last three years and are approaching or challenging their highest closing price of that period. ABUS fits this type of setup. The three-year setup ABUS reached a low of $1.73 on October 23, 2023. The stock subsequently more than doubled and eventually reached a high of $4.95 on December 15, 2025. After that high, ABUS pulled back to $3.67 on February 5, 2026, before beginning another advance toward the previous $4.95 level. The 2 ATR breakout rule I do not buy simply because the stock returns to its previous high. I require a confirmed breakout of 2 ATR above the previous high, based exclusively on closing prices. Intraday prices are irrelevant for this rule. To establish the trigger, I use the ATR from the trading day immediately before the stock reaches or breaks the previous high on a closing basis. On August 18, 2026, ABUS closed at $4.84 and the ATR was $0.18. The calculation is therefore: **Previous high: $4.95** **ATR: $0.18** **2 ATR: $0.36** **Entry trigger: $4.95 + $0.36 = $5.31** The potential trade My potential long entry is therefore $5.31. The signal will only be triggered if ABUS closes at or above $5.31. An intraday move above this level does not count under my rules. Until that happens, there is no trade. The idea behind the method is simple: First identify financially attractive companies, then require a strong three-year price pattern, and finally let price action confirm the entry. Rather than trying to predict whether ABUS will break out, I know beforehand exactly what I need to see. Long trigger: ABUS closing at or above $5.31. - This is a description of my personal trading methodology and is not investment advice.
