In 2008, Colorado’s Curecanti National Recreation Area began screening boats and watercraft for invasive mussels at Blue Mesa Reservoir. The goal was to stop the species before it could enter and spread. Ten years later, the reservoir remained completely mussel-free. The result showed what consistent prevention can achieve. Regular inspections and public cooperation helped protect Blue Mesa’s water, wildlife and recreation from an ecological threat.
