Tottenham Hotspur will feel hard done by after debutant Omar Marmoush was denied a penalty despite being brought down in the box against Newcastle United.While Spurs were left licking their wounds after being on the receiving end of a 2-0 scoreline against Newcastle, the Lilywhites did have the upper hand for large parts of the game.They had a couple of big chances to go in front in the first period, and they could have had a spot-kick at the start of the second half.Omar Marmoush was first to a loose ball inside the box in the 47th minute, with replays showing that Malick Thiaw challenged for the ball and caught the Egyptian.Photo by Harvey Murphy/News Images/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesDermot Gallagher says referee was right to deny Tottenham a penaltyMarmoush’s appeals fell on deaf ears as referee Peter Bankes waved those away while the VAR did not intervene after the decision.Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes that Bankes made the right call to deny the home side a spot-kick.He suggested that given the higher threshold for penalties from this season, there was not enough evidence to suggest that Marmoush had clearly been fouled.Gallagher told Sky Sports about the incident: “What they’ve (the officials) done this season is totally consistent. It’s minimal contact. Is it a foul? A clear foul? I think not. Referee says no, and VAR has been told not to intervene unless it’s clearly wrong. Leave it as it is.”Tim Sherwood and Jay Bothroyd claim Spurs should have had a penaltyHowever, former England international Jay Bothroyd insisted that it was a clear foul from Thiaw, dismissing Gallagher’s claim that the contact was minimal.Former Spurs midfielder and interim head coach, Tim Sherwood, agreed, and believes that it would have been a different game had the home side been given the spot-kick they deserved.Boythroyd said: “That’s the wrong decision. It should be given as a penalty. That’s cute play from the forward, it’s not the defender’s fault. The striker comes round and gets the toe on it. There was the Jarrad Branthwaite incident last week – which was offside, but it was a penalty. This one should be as well. I wouldn’t say that’s minimal contact. He’s kicked his foot.”Sherwood said: “The threshold is massively higher. It should be given. There’s certainly contact in there. Thiaw hasn’t seen him coming. Marmoush has done enough to get his toe on it. He’s praying for contact. Has Thiaw made contact with the ball? No. Has he made contact with the player? Yes. Has he denied a goalscoring opportunity? 100 per cent. Penalty. It would have been a different game.
