A perhaps-unprecedented rarity: this week's five maidens ran at five different tracks.5 – CARAGOGO, KD, 8/29-2nd, 1 1-16 miles (turf) (video)Beyer Speed Figure – 82(c, 3, by Caravaggio–Channel Lady, by English Channel)O/B-Calumet Farm (Ky). T-Rusty Arnold. J-Edgar Morales.Stretching out in distance, the Calumet homebred quickly took control and led throughout in his fifth start. Calumet's Brad Kelley–former Kentucky Downs owner and the track's third all-time owner in money won–bought the two-time Grade III-winning dam for $220,000 toward the end of her career and this is her eighth foal to race. At the time Caragogo was bred, Coolmore had moved stallion Caravaggio from Ireland to Kentucky and he since has been sold to Japan. 4 – VANITY, WO, 8/29-4th, 7 furlongs (Tapeta) (video)Beyer Speed Figure – 83(f, 3, by Vekoma–Tap Tap Tapping, by Tapit)O-D J Stable. B-Sandra Sexton & Silver Fern Farm (Ky). T-Mark Casse. J-Rafael Hernandez. The even-money favorite hooked up with pacesetter Fancy Pearls at the quarter pole and proved narrowly best despite leaning inward on her left lead. A $140,000 KEESEP yearling buy out of a twice-GSP dam, she was making her first start since a second in Woodbine's GII Mazarine on November 2. In her five previous races she showed a complete lack of speed–like her mother–but Saturday she was with the pace all the way. 3 – CAROLINA LEGACY, DMR, 8/29-2nd, 5.5 furlongs (video)Beyer Speed Figure- 84(g, 3, by Munnings–Tar Heel Mom, by Flatter)O-Hronis Racing. B-Upson Downs Farm (Ky). T-John Sadler. J-Joel Rosario.Tar Heel Mom recorded Grade II victories at Saratoga and Aqueduct and three triple-digit Beyers, but Carolina Legacy brought $100,000 as a yearling because her foals hadn't won a race in six years. After a training setback delayed Carolina Legacy's debut until this June and he was well-beaten vs. open maidens, the Hronis family and Sadler chose to cut their losses and drop him into a $20,000 claimer. They may have expected a win at 8/5 odds, but probably not a 10 ½-length romp with a 34-point Beyer jump. He was lost to a claim but earned the $18,000 winner's share and only time will tell if it was the right move. 2 – MONSTER MAX, PRX, 8/26-5th, 6 furlongs (video)Beyer Speed Figure- 85(g, 3, by Maximus Mischief–Prove Em Wrong, by Vancouver {Aus})B-Wolf Creek Farms (Ky). O/T-Marya Montoya. J-Mychel Sanchez. Here's another romp: Monster Max made the lead for the first time in four starts and streaked to a 10 3/4-length score at even money. The $50,000 2-year-old buy at Fasig-Tipton is out of an unraced dam with little pedigree but showed Wednesday he's capable–at least in the right circumstance. He was also running with first-time Lasix, whether that mattered or not. 1 – BRICKYARD BELLE, SAR, 8/27-5th, 5.5 furlongs (turf) (video)Beyer Speed Figure – 86(f, 2, by Yaupon–Ready to Unleash, by More than Ready)O-Brickyard Belle Racing, Ed Farmer Beggs II and Brandon Flowers, and Briles Family Stable. B-Hall Racing (Ky). T-Miguel Clement. J-Manny Franco. As a whole, offspring of hot young sire Yaupon have been more productive on dirt than grass-winning at a remarkable 24% in dirt sprints and 11% in turf sprints. But Brickyard Belle showcased his versatility by looking like a star in a smashing score. The $600,000 OBS April purchase and half-sister to turf sprint millionaire Joe Shiesty patiently tracked 5 lengths from the lead, then blew away rivals with a :23.39 final quarter. Her debut 86 Beyer is second-fastest among juvenile fillies on turf (to Side Quest's 87) and only two points from the fastest on any surface (to Harper's Corner's 88 on dirt). And she did it the right way.The post Five Fastest Maidens for the Week of Aug. 24 – 30 appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
